Box Score Hartsville, S.C.-Taking the win in the ninth inning of play, the Queens University of Charlotte softball team defeated Wingate 3-1 on Thursday, April 28, 2016. The win advanced the team in the South Atlantic Conference and moved their overall record to 23-25.
In a low scoring battle, Wingate reached the scoreboard first finding a run in the bottom of the second. Wingate held the only run until the seventh inning, when the Royals made their move to force extra play.
Ashton Whitaker found the tying run as she flew one out over the right field wall.
Both teams sat scoreless in the eighth inning brining about the ninth at bat for Queens.
Kayla Hall reached base off a fielder's choice before making her way to second off a sacrifice bunt from
Taylor Cheek. In the next at bat,
Elaina Frantellizzi received a free pass to make it two runners on base.
Sydney Ditto earned the winning RBI as her hit reached into right field, giving both Hall and Frantellizzi a chance to reach home plate. The two runs claimed the game in Queens' favor.
Queens led the game in hits tabbing five to the Bulldogs three. Queens would leave six runs unscored as Wingate left five runners on base.
Lyndey McCurry (10-10) tabbed the team win as the lone Royals pitcher of the game. Her nine innings pitched saw just three hits and four strikeouts. She would give up one earned run.
Wingate also used just one pitcher in Stacey Houser (19-12) who saw five hits, three earned runs, and four strikeouts.
Queens will face the winner between Tusculum and Catawba tomorrow at 10 a.m.
