Brevard, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's tennis team (14-3) claimed the South Atlantic Conference title on Sunday, April 24, 2016, defeating the top seed in the tournament and the No. 39-ranked team in the nation, Wingate (16-6) in a 5-2 match. This was the first time in school history that the program has won a conference tournament title, dating back to 1996 when Queens first joined the Carolinas Virginia Athletic Conference. Additionally,
Carlotta Nassi picked up the tournament's most outstanding player award.
Aided by their doubles play, Queens started the match with a big advantage securing all three courts for a 3-0 start. Nassi and
Caroline Nielsen tallied the first point with 8-3 win in the No. 2 spot.
Claire Hamilton and
Hannah Lehfeldt tabbed the team's next point as the two found a 9-7 win, defeating Layla Tanik and Sydney Homan as the No. 3 doubles pair. The sweep came from
Marta Gonzalez and
Melissa Laing who took the top flight with a 9-8 (7-2) match.
Wingate found their way onto the board taking a point in the No. 5 spot of the singles competition. However, Gonzalez moved the team into match point after defeating Andrea Ternera 6-1, 6-3 on court two. As the teams advanced further into the match, the Bulldogs placed another point on the board to make it a 4-2 match after taking a win on court three.
Victory came from a three set battle on court six. Lehfeldt rallied to claim the last two sets of play and defeated Homan with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 score, clinching the match.
Queens earns the automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament, advancing into Southeast Regional play for the second straight year in a row.
