Brevard, N.C- The No. 42-ranked Queens University of Charlotte women's tennis team (13-3) punched their ticket for the final match in the South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament. The Royals would see a 5-3 score to top the No. 44-ranked Tusculum Pioneers who finished the day with a 19-5 overall record.
The Royals took the advantage coming out of doubles with a 2-1 start. Tusculum would claim the first point of the match but Queens followed with a win on court three with an 8-5 finish from
Claire Hamilton and
Hannah Lehfeldt. At the No. 1 spot,
Marta Gonzalez and
Melissa Laing would find an 8-6 score to close out
doubles play.
Play through the singles matches was equal as Newberry started with the first point tie the score at 2-2. Queens answered with a win from Lehfeldt on court six with a 7-5, 6-4 score and a win from Laing on court two with a 6-4, 7-5 score. Tusculum would not fall so easily, posting the win on the No. 2 court to force their way back within one, 4-3. With two courts left to finish,
Caroline Nielsen capped the match taking the next point on the board. Nielsen saw her way to the victory defeating Adrienne Kaye 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 4 spot.
Queens will face the top seed in the tournament and 39
th nationally ranked Wingate at 9 a.m., tomorrow at Brevard College. The two will play for the South Atlantic Conference Title.
