Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team (14-2, 7-0 SAC), ranked 15
th in the nation, topped the Wolves of Newberry (5-11, 1-7 SAC) this afternoon at Dickson Field, giving the Royals the most wins in program history.
Brittany Larranaga and
Maggie Masters each recorded hat tricks on the day to lead Queens, while
Kelly Dowd and
Katie Wardle scored two goals apiece.
Kourtney Goebel tallied one goal to go with her three assists for a total of four points, leading the team for the day. Masters also led the team in ground balls with four ground balls, while Dowd led in draw controls with five.
The Royals opened play with a 4-0 run before allowing the Wolves to find the back of the net at 22:55. Queens would then put five more points on the board to extend their lead to eight, 9-1, at the midway point. They went on to lead 15-2 at the break.
In the second half, Queens only allowed two more goals from Newberry to secure their win. Freshmen
Sarah Bell and
Katie Wardle would net the three points of the half for the home team.
The Royals outshot Newberry, 33-13, putting 26 shots on goal. The team also won the battle at the draw, 17-7. Goalkeeper
Christine Wiese had three saves to tab the win.
Ajahna Grosvenor led the Wolves with three goals, while Maddie Campbell added one goal. Goalkeeper Brandy Bowman tabbed seven saves and was credited with the loss on the day.
Before today's game the Royals honored seniors
Brittany Larranaga,
Megan Wagner,
Abby Grange,
Bridgette Larranaga,
Maggie Masters,
Gabby Farina and
Sydney Dishman for their accomplishments on the field during their careers. Collectively, these seven seniors have led the Royals to a 50-21 record, and three consecutive winning seasons. The Royals have been ranked nationally for the past three seasons as well, and won the 2013 and 2014 South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Titles and Championships.
The Royals are back in action at home against No. 13 Limestone College at 7 p.m., on Monday, April 25.
