Royals Take Pair of Wins on the Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Greenville, Tenn.- The Queens University of Charlotte softball team saw a double-header sweep on Friday, March 25, 2016, over the Pioneers of Tusculum. The Royals grabbed a 4-3 win in game one before shutting out Tusculum in game two with a 5-0 score. Queens would move to a 15-16 overall record and 4-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. Tusculum would fall to 15-17 overall and 1-3 in league play.

In game one, Tusculum found their way to the board first scoring a run in the bottom of third inning. Queens found an immediate response in the top of the fourth as Lyndey McCurry and Jasmyn Lindsay reached home plate on a throwing error. Queens added two more runs in the top of the fifth as Aston Whitaker singled down the right line to score both Taylor Rosenbalm and Abby Lathan. Despite the two runs scored by the Pioneers in the bottom of the inning, Queens continued their hold on the game to take the win at 4-3.

McCurry tabbed the win to move to 7-6 overall, going 4.1 innings with five hits and three runs. She also tallied four strikeouts during the game. Evie Scott grabbed the save, her first of the year, pitching the last 2.2 innings with just two hits giving up.

Eliza Davis suffered the loss for Tusculum pitching four complete innings with four runs and six hits. Cayla Cecil pitched three innings for three hits and no runs.

Queens controlled all of game two, blanking Tusculum through the seven innings. The game started strong with three runs in the opening at bat. Hanna Hasker would send Rosenbalm home off a hit into left field. The play added another run from Samantha Martinez who rounded home after a fielding error. Lindsay eventually brought Hasker home making the third run.

Queens remained quite through the middle part of the game; however, McCurry got the team moving again with a triple to score Brooke Sanford. Lindsay again brought home a runner, her third RBI of the day, as a sacrifice bunt launched McCurry across the plate.

Catelyn Presley saw the win to move to a 3-6 record after pitching for five complete innings. Presley kept the Pioneers off the board giving up six hits and taking three strikeouts. Scott would again come in as the relief pitcher to see two innings with no hits and one strikeout.

Taylor Plemons (2-5) tallied the loss for the Pioneers pitching in just the opening two outs. She would tally four hits for three runs. Cecil finished the 6.1 innings of the game giving up six hits and two runs.

Queens will face another SAC team on Wednesday, March 30, as the Royals return home to face Wingate for a double-header beginning at 2 p.m.
