Box Score 2 Charlotte, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte softball team suffered a pair of losses to Francis-Marion University on Wednesday, March 16, 2016. Queens would drop to an 11-14 overall record while Francis Marion moved to 21-9 after the double-header.
The Royals struggled to put runners on base during the first game resulting in 7-2 loss. Francis-Marion got things started quickly in the first inning with hits by Chelsea Welty, Mykah Nevin, and Taylor Johnson. The combination scored two runs.
Patriots' Mikala Barnhart scored in the second inning, Kristen English scored in the third, and Taylor Brunson scored in the fourth advancing the score to 5-0.
The Patriots found the gaps totaling fifteen hits to the Royals four. Queens was able to place a few runners on base early but was unable to bring anyone home until the sixth inning when
Ashton Whitaker singled to right center field earning two RBI's in
Samantha Martinez and
Elaina Frantellizzi. The Patriots scored one final run in the top of the seventh inning as the Royals fell with a final score of 7-2.
Shelby Kelley of the Patriots recorded her eleventh win of the season pitching all seven innings.
Lyndey McCurry took the loss pitching 3.1 innings while
Evie Scott finished up the game pitching 3.2 innings. The two combined for three strikeouts.
With a fresh start, Queens was able to score the first run of game two when McCurry singled through the right side earning a run from Martinez who found her way on base, beating the pitching battle with a walk. The second and third inning were scoreless; however, the Royals tallied two hits in the fourth with one from
Brooke Sanford and one from
Taylor Cheek, scoring another run.
As Queens sat with a 2-0 lead, the Francis-Marion bats came alive in the sixth inning with hits from Taylor Brunson, Welty, Nevin, and Johnson scoring three runs to take the lead 3-2. The Royals held the Patriots to no runs in the top of the seventh but were unable to score themselves. Francis-Marion grasped the late win over the Royals 3-2.
Francis-Marion pitcher, Samantha Wroblewski (10-1), secured the win. She pitched seven innings and earned four strikeouts.
Queens pitcher, Catelyn Pressley, took the loss pitching 5.1 innings while
Evie Scott finished the game pitching 1.2 innings. The two combined for two strikeouts allowing seven hits.
The Royals will be back in action on Saturday, March 19, in Jefferson City, Tenn., as they take on the Eagles of Carson-Newman College (14-8) for a double-header series. The first game will begin at 1 p.m., and the second will begin at 3 p.m. This will be the first conference game for the Royals.
