Royals Hold Off Final Storm By Tornados, Win First Road Game Of The Season

Box Score BREVARD, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (4-17, 2-14 SAC) built a 13-point, second half lead and held on just long enough to knock off the Brevard Tornados (1-18, 0-15 SAC) 62-60 on Saturday, February 6, 2016.

The Royals had no issue finding the bottom of the net as they shot 51.1 percent from the field and made 11-of-15 free throws in the game. Queens outrebounded the Tornados 34-29 in the game, but turned the ball over 20 times, leading to 23 points for Brevard.

McKell Oliverio had a game-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting to lead the Royals scoring punch. Defensively, the Royals were led by Carmen Richardson who snagged a career-high 15 rebounds to go along with 13 points. Erin Brundage was the only other Royal to score in double digits as she added 10 points in the game.

Brevard was the early leader as they jumped out to a 13-5 lead following a three pointer by Hadara Bannister with 5:16 on the clock in the first quarter. Queens would respond by going on 12-2 run that was capped by a Richardson jumper to give the Royals their first lead of the game, 17-15, with 6:57 to go in the first half. Minutes later, the game was tied at 21, but then Queens went on a 5-0 run that was started by Victoria Robinson's free throws to take a 26-21 lead with just under a minute to go in the first half. Sheridan Pressley drained a three pointer with one second left to give the Royals a 29-24 lead at the half.

Queens started the second half out strong as Maggie Stewart's jumper with 4:11 remaining in the third gave them what would be their largest lead in the game, 14-points, and a 43-29 lead. The Royals continued to hold a double digit lead for most of the fourth quarter as Oliverio's jumper with 5:42 remaining in the game gave the Royals a 57-45 lead over the Tornados. Brevard was unfazed by the deficit as they went on a 13-0 run to take a 58-57 lead. The run was capped by Kyley Clark, who made both of her free throws with just under two minutes to play in the game. Queens responded fast as Oliverio hit a jumper with 1:36 remaining to take back the lead and right after that, Brundage made a jumper to give them a three-point lead, 61-58 with 55 seconds to go. Madison Lenox made a contested layup with 39 second left to cut the Royals lead down to one, 61-60. Brundage was fouled with six seconds left and made the first of two free throws to give Queens a two-point lead and time expired before Brevard could respond, giving Queens a 62-60 win on the road.

Madison Lenox was the Tornados leading scorer as she added in 16 points in the game. Whitney DeMoss was strong on the boards as she grabbed 14 rebounds to go along with her 12 points. The only other Brevard player to score in double digits was Hadara Bannister, who scored 10 points and went 7-of-8 from the free throw line.

Queens will return to action on Wednesday, February 10th, as they play host to the Wingate Bulldogs with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m.
