th ranked Queens University of Charlotte women's tennis team swept the Trojans of Anderson on Sunday, February 28, 2016, for a 9-0 score in the match. Queens would improve their record to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in South Atlantic Conference play. Anderson would drop to 6-2 overall and move to 3-1 in conference.
"We've been working on our doubles play in practice and we're playing better doubles in each outing," said Head Coach
Billy Boykin. "I'm happy with our overall progress so far. We played a complete match today from start to finish. We're looking forward to more match play tomorrow."
The No. 1 doubles match would concluded with
Carlotta Nassi and
Melissa Laing upsetting the #22 team in the nation, Ivey Welborn and Rebecca Bruning, with an 8-3 score to claim the first point of the day.
Marta Gonzalez and
Caroline Nielsen took court two defeating Karen Faria and Alexandra Ebner with a score of 8-3. Rounding out the doubles matches,
Claire Hamilton and
Hannah Lehfeldt topped Abigail Gregory and Nikkola Wichenko to battle for a 9-8 (7-5) score.
Nassi and Gonzalez tallied the next two points for the team to take the match for the Royals. Nassi saw the No. 1 court to a 6-0, 6-2 score against Faria while Gonzalez went 6-3, 6-2 against Welborn on court two.
Laing secured a score of 6-4, 6-1 against Bruning for the No. 3 point. Nielsen found the win on court four with a score of 6-2, 6-0 over Ebner.
Claire Hamilton and Lehfeldt would claim the shutout with wins on court five and six, respectively. Hamilton took a 6-2, 6-1 score while Lehfeldt went 6-0, 6-4.
The Royals will host a home match tomorrow against Lincoln Memorial at 1 p.m.
