Women’s Tennis Takes Down Lenoir-Rhyne

Hickory, N.C. – It was a perfect 9-0 match for the No. 45th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte women's tennis team on Friday, February 26, 2016. The Royals would defeat Lenoir-Rhyne in the match who would drop to a 5-5 record on the year and a 1-1 record in conference play. Queens maintained an unbeaten run to start conference seeing their way to a 2-0 record while advancing to 4-1 overall.

The Royals started the day with a sweep through doubles seeing a building performance as the team worked its way through the courts. Court one went 8-5 with Melissa Laing and Carlotta Nassi taking the match victory. Caroline Nielsen and Marta Gonzalez went 8-3 on court two while Claire Hamilton and Hannah Lehfeldt secured court three with an 8-1 score.

The continued success saw its way into the singles play as five courts concluded in two sets. Nassi and Nielsen would only drop two games in their matchups. Nassi found a 6-2, 6-0 score on court one while Nielsen went 6-0, 6-2 for court four. It was equal 6-2 sets for Gonzalez as she met Marta Escanero Funes on court two. Hamilton rounded out court five against Taylor Fredrickson with a 6-2, 6-4 score and Hannah Lehfeldt went 6-0 against Jessica Rumple for court six. Laing took the No. 3 singles point against Julia Ponomareya find a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 win.

The Royals will host their first home match of the year against Anderson. The match on Sunday, February 28 will begin at 1 p.m., at Freedom Park.
