Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (5-21, 3-18 SAC) fell to the visiting Lenoir-Rhyne Bears (11-14, 10-11 SAC) by the score of 72-47 in the Royals home finale on Wednesday, February 24, 2016.
The Royals shot 40.0 percent from the field in the game but were only able to knock down 3-of-11 from three-point range. Queens was outrebounded by only a slim margin, 32-26, and was able to turn ten Lenoir-Rhyne turnovers into seven points for the Royals.
Carmen Richardson and Karlesha Thompson led the way for the Royals as they each added 13 points in the game. Also scoring in double digits was
Sheridan Pressley who put in 10 points and was 2-of-5 from three-point range.
McKell Oliverio led the team in rebounding as she added six in the game.
Lenoir-Rhyne started the game with the hot hand as they jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead as the Bears' Kendall Toineeta hit back-to-back three pointers with the second falling with 7:22 on the clock in the first quarter. The Royals responded with a 6-2 run that brought the score to 12-6 after
Maggie Stewart's jumper with 4:44 remaining in the first quarter. The Bears would then go on yet another run, this time a 9-2 run that gave them a 21-10 lead with 9:41 to play in the second quarter. Both teams would go bucket-for-bucket over the next couple of minutes as Richardson's layup with 5:54 remaining in the half would make the score 27-16 in favor of the Bears. Lenoir-Rhyne scored the last basket of the half as Toineeta hit a three pointer with 11 seconds left, giving them a 40-22 lead at the half.
Both teams started the second half on scoring streaks as Lenoir-Rhyne opened the quarter on a 6-0 run that was immediately answered by the Royals with a 6-0 run of their own that made the score 46-28 after Thompson's layup with 4:57 remaining in the third quarter. Queens would end the quarter on an 11-6 run to make the score 55-39 following Thompson's layup with 27 seconds left. The Royals would outscore the Bears 17-15 in the third period. Lenoir-Rhyne would respond as they opened the final quarter on an 8-3 run that would give the Bears a 21-point, 63-42 lead with just under seven minutes to play in the game. Thompson's layup with 4:27 on the clock would be the last field goal the Royals would score in the game, making the score 68-46 in favor of the Bears. There wouldn't be much scoring from that point forward as Lenoir-Rhyne would take the game by the score of 72-47.
Toineeta and Jasmine Stafford each added 13 points to lead the Bears offensively in the game. Leading Lenoir-Rhyne on the boards was Brooke Robinson who grabbed eight rebounds to go along with six points
The Royals will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, February 27th, 2016 when they travel to Greeneville, Tennessee to face off of against the Tusculum Pioneers at 2:00 p.m.
