Queens Finds Late Runs to Secure Win against Armstrong State; Royals Fall to Mount Olive

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Savannah, Ga.- The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (4-6 overall) went 1-1 on day two of the Armstrong Atlantic Tournament, topping Armstrong State (11-5 overall) on Sunday, February 21, 2016, finding two runs in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the game at 3-2. The Royals fell earlier in the day to Mount Olive, 5-0, as the Trojans concluded the tournament with a 3-7 overall record.

Queens rallied after suffering a loss earlier in the day to Mount Olive to face one of the top teams in the region. Strong defense aided the team's success as Armstrong State left seven runners on base during the game. Lyndey McCurry added seven strikeouts to the mix to keep the Pirates at just two runs.

Armstrong State scored a run in the third inning; however, the Royals echoed putting up a run of their own in the fourth inning. With nothing doing in the fifth, both teams turned their attention to their sixth at bat. Two hits landed a run for the Pirates as they left an additional two runners on base. With pressure to find an answer, Queens placed Sydney Ditto and Taylor Rosenbalm in scoring positions. Opportunity presented when an error by Armstrong State's third baseman let Ditto jump from third to home. Rosenbalm would steal home to make it a three run game for the Royals, giving the team the win.

McCurry took the win to move to a 3-2 pitching record. In addition to the seven strikeouts, she gave up only one earned run off of eight hits.

Jane Trzaska suffered the loss for Armstrong moving to a 2-1 record. She gave up five hits and one earned run while finding nine strikeouts.

Earlier in the day, slow offense downed the Royals as the team found just two hits coming from McCurry and Brooke Sanford against Mount Olive. The Trojans would build as the team worked its way to a 5-0 score. With a single down the middle from Jazmin Montgomery, Callie Ferrell put the first run on the board in the second inning. Mount Olive found another run in the fourth inning, before a homer over the left field wall brought in two runs. The Trojans added their fifth run in the sixth inning.

Catelyn Presley (1-2) took the loss for the team, pitching 4.1 innings. She saw seven hits, four runs and a strikeout. Evie Scott came in as a relief pitcher to finish the remaining 2.2 innings with three hits and one run.

Madison Johnston (2-3) tallied the win giving up just two hits and earning two strikeouts.

The Royals will compete at the Mid-South Classic on February 27, 2016 seeing four games over the weekend.
