Box Score 2 Savannah, Ga. – The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (3-5) saw a 1-1 result come from the first day of the Armstrong Atlantic Tournament as the Royals faced the Armstrong Pirates (10-4) and the Mount Olive Trojans (2-6). Despite seeing a five inning, 10-1, loss against Armstrong State, the Royals refocused to top the Trojans, 5-3, in the team's second game of the day.
The Royals never saw a trailing score as they faced the Trojans, who claimed preseason runner-up for the Conference Carolinas' title.
Jasmyn Lindsay grabbed a one-base hit into left field to bring
Elaina Frantellizzi home in the fourth inning for the first run of the game. Mount Olive answered with a double from Anna Ingram to even the score at 1-1. The two teams stayed equal in the fifth inning adding a run on both sides.
Sydney Ditto scored for the Royals off a single up the middle from
Taylor Rosenbalm. Mount Olive found their second run of the night from a one-run homerun from Kayla Allen.
Again aiding a scoring run, Lindsay, with a finely position bunt, brought
Lyndey McCurry home from third for an unearned run. In the bottom of the sixth, some strong defense gave the team an edge as they found two outs before intentionally walking Ingram. The Royals secured the third out with the next batter up to plate. Queens finished with four straight innings of scoring runs as Ditto reached home plate for the second time of the night. Rosenbalm would cross on the next play to bring Queens to five runs.
McCurry grab the game win moving to a 2-2 record. She would pitch all seven innings, facing 28 batters and throwing six strikeouts. She would end the game with eight hits and three runs given up.
Mount Olive's Caitlin Ewers (0-3) suffered the loss for the team giving up 10 hits and three runs to the Royals after pitching all seven innings.
Earlier in the day, Queens faced Armstrong State who gathered votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association preseason rankings. Queens' did reach home plate first as a single from Rosenbalm gave Ditto the go-ahead. However, that would be the only scoring run from the Royals. The Pirates brought in four runners in the opening inning before adding a two-run homerun in the bottom of the second from Hannah Reppert. Queens was unable to find answers as Armstrong scored three more runners in the bottom of the third to take a 10-1 lead.
Evie Scott and
Catelyn Presley shared time pitching as Scott opened the game with 1.2 innings pitched for eight hits and six earned runs. She would suffer the loss for a 0-2 record. Presley pitched 2.1 innings, giving up five hits and four earned runs.
Armstrong also used two pitchers during the game as Morgan Duff gathered the win to become 2-0 on the year. She pitched three complete innings with five hits and one run. Jane Trzaska finished the game going two innings with just one hit.
Queens will see both teams again tomorrow opening the day with Mount Olive a 10 a.m., before playing Armstrong State at 12 p.m.
