Men's Swimming Ends 2016 with Pool Records

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte men's swim team defeated Catawba College on Saturday, December 17, 2016. The Royals snapped four pool records as they took the win over the Indians 135-96.
 
"I thought the athletes performed well after just finishing finals on Friday," said Head Swim Coach Jeff Dugdale. "It was great to have Rost (Rostyslav Fednya) and Marius join us. Rost had an incredible meet going 52.6 in the 100 yard breaststroke."
 
Fednya's time in the 100 yard breaststroke earned him a new pool record and a NCAA "A" standard time as he touched in first place with a time of 52.66. He was nearly two seconds faster than the previous pool record time, landing him atop division II time standings. Nicholas Arakelian claimed second place in the event with a time of 57.30.
 
The meet also saw a new pool record in the in the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 3:16.21. Paul Pijulet, Fedyna, Marius Kusch, and Dion Dreesens, respectively, took the event with a seven second gap for a NCAA "B" standard time.
 
Kusch broke the pool record in the 200 yard butterfly, reaching the wall in first place with a time of 1:49.38. He was followed by Pijulet who touched in second place, clocking a time of 1:50.92.
 
Fednya found his second pool record of the day, securing the new time in the 200 yard breaststroke. He reached the wall with a 2:00.07 for an NCAA "B" standard mark the race.
 
Dreesens added a first place swim in the 1000 yard freestyle as Hector Tricas followed, touching in second place. Dreesens swam a 9:29.72 for first place while Tricas clocked a 9:36.99.
 
Ben Mayes, Parker Cook-Weeks, and Chris Glafenhien took the top three swims in the 200 yard freestyle, respectively. Mayes led the group with a time of 1:42.47. Cook-Weeks claimed second swimming a 1:43.69 while Glafenhien swam a 1:45.27.
 
Zach Bunner had the top swim in the 100 yard backstroke. Bunner swam a 51.01 to put a second gap between himself and the competition.
 
It was a 1-2 finish in the 50 yard freestyle for the Royals as Mayes took first with a time of 21.09. Mitchell Harwood claimed second with a time of 21.11.
 
Harwood would find a first place swim moments later, laying claim to the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 46.76.
 
In the 200 yard backstroke Arakelian clocked a 1:54.08 to lead the event with a first place swim. Jackson Tunks tabbed second place, reaching the wall with a 1:56.63. Glafenhien followed with a time of 1:58.64 for third.
 
Tricas found the top swim in the 500 yard freestyle, claiming the event with a 4:41.08. Jackson Kojima clocked a 4:49.73 for second place while Ian Shackley took third with a 4:50.96 and John Evans took fourth with a 4:54.60.
 
Narrowly missing the pool record, Kusch grabbed a time of 47.91 in the 100 yard butterfly. He would secure a NCAA "B" standard time.
 
Arakelian rounded out the individual events with a first place swim in the 400 individual medley. He claimed the placement with a 4:12.14.
 
Kusch, Pijulet, Mayes, and Dreesens, respectively, tallied the last win of the day as the four took the top swim in the 200 yard freestyle relay. They would combine for a time of 1:21.13.
 
The Royals will continue their season on January 14, as they head to Hickory, N.C., to face Lenoir-Rhyne and Limestone at 11 a.m.
