Softball Defeated By Young Harris

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Milledgeville, Ga. - The Queens University of Charlotte Softball Program suffered a pair of losses on Sunday, January 31, 2016, to Young Harris College who is ranked No. 5 in the Southeast Region preseason poll. Completing the full seven innings, the Royals fell 3-0 in the first game. Young Harris College continued the drive into the second game clinching the double-header series with an 11-7 win.

The Bobcats put the pressure on early as Sarah Magill doubled to right center field and Murphy Davis singled up the middle scoring two runs in the first inning. In the fourth inning Magill double again, this time to left center field. The hit was documented as an RBI scoring Bobcats player Jeanie Perrucci for the third and final run of the game. The Royals had four hits throughout the game but were unable to reach home plate, leaving four runners on base.

The bats came alive for the Royals during the second game as the team totaled ten hits. Taylor Rosenbalm got it started early as she and Sydney Ditto forced a throwing error by the Mountain Lion's catcher. The failed pickoff attempt scored the first run of the game for the Royals. Not too long after, Venus Gonzalez hit a two-run homerun to left field resulting in a first inning three run lead. Young Harris bounced back in the second inning when Kelsey Nix singled down the left field line bringing home one run for the Mountain Lions. Young Harris continued to apply the pressure in the third inning with a double by Magill to left center field, a single by Grace Botti to center field, and a sacrifice fly by Davis. Young Harris scored four runs in the third inning. Queens, determined to fight back, put runners on base in the fourth inning. Hannah Hasker hit a sacrifice fly out to left field and Ditto tripled to right field scoring two runs for the Royals. Young Harris dominated the latter half of the game scoring three runs in the sixth inning and three runs in the seventh inning while limiting Queens to only two runs in the seventh. The Mountain Lions totaled eleven runs while Queens came up just short with seven runs.

The Royals placed three pitchers on the mound throughout the double-header series. Evie Scott (0-1) took the loss in the first game while Lyndey McCurry (0-2) took the loss in the second. Catelyn Presley also pitched 2.1 innings for the Royals. Combined the three gave up 20 hits, 14 runs, and nine walks. They also combined for six strikeouts.

Young Harris' Darby Stanford (2-0) pitched her way to a win in the first game. She gave up only four hits and totaled three strikeouts. Mary Catherine Smith and Jeanie Perrucci (1-0) partnered up for the second game. Combined they gave up seven runs, ten hits, and five walks. They also totaled two strikeouts.

The Royals play next this Saturday, February 6, 2016, at home against Lees-McRae College. The double-header series will be held at Park Road Park in Charlotte, NC. The first game will begin at 12 p.m. and the second will start at 2 p.m.
