Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (3-14, 1-11 SAC) struggled to find the bottom of the net in tonight's game against Newberry College (11-8, 10-3 SAC), as they would fall by the score of 68-37 on Wednesday, January 27th.
The Royals shot only 30.8 percent from the field in the game, but were able to make 12 of their 16 made baskets in the second half. Newberry took advantage in the paint as they scored 48 of their 68 total points in the post.
Carmen Richardson was the leading scorer for the Royals in the game as she added 13 points, five rebounds, and three steals in the game.
McKell Oliverio was second on the team in scoring as she added seven points to go along with four rebounds in the game.
Newberry came out of the gate on fire, as they were able to start the game on a 21-4 run.
Maggie Stewart's turnaround jumper with 3:29 remaining in the first quarter would give the Royals two of their four first quarter points. Queens scored the first basket of the second quarter as Richardson drained a three pointer to make the score 25-6 in favor of Newberry. The Royals would only allow Newberry to score 10 total points in the second quarter, but could only make four of their 25 shots in the first half as Newberry took a 31-9 lead into the half.
Sheridan Pressley knocked down a three-point basket with 7:29 in the third quarter to make the score 37-14 in favor of the Wolves. Newberry's lead grew to as large as 34 points in the second half, as Samantha Creed hit a three pointer with 6:03 remaining in the game to give them a 60-26 lead. Queens would answer with a 7-0 run that was capped by a Richardson three-point basket to cut the lead down to 27 points, 60-33, in favor of the Wolves. Newberry would call a timeout and would halt the Royals run and take the 68-37 win.
Newberry had eight players who scored at least five points in the game, led by Meg Essex, who scored a game high 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Essex also added six rebounds and four blocks in the game. Emily Perry was the only other Wolves player to score double digits in the game as she added 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting.
The Royals will take the floor for the third time this week as they travel to Carson Newman on Saturday, January 30th with tip-off set for 2:00 p.m.
