Royals Dominate First Quarter in Blowout of Brevard

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (3-13, 1-10 SAC), broke out of their 12 game losing streak as they dominated conference foe Brevard College (1-13, 1-10 SAC), 69-48, on Monday, January 25, 2016.
 
The Royals shot 53.7 percent from the field, assisting on 20 of their 29 made shots. They also out rebounded Brevard, 41-33, and only allowed them to shoot 28.1 percent and make only 4-of-29 from three-point range.
 
Maggie Stewart had a great game as she scored 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field to go along with six rebounds. Karlesha Thompson added a double double for the Royals as she scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Carmen Richardson was all over the stat sheet as she scored 14 points, dished out six assists and snagged six rebounds.
 
The Royals came out firing in the Levine Center as they jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead with the help of eight points from Stewart. Queens continued their run through the second quarter as Richardson's three pointer gave the Royals a 26-3 lead with 6:19 remaining in the first half. The Royals lead grew as large as 24 points in the first half, but Brevard was able to make a 5-0 run to cut the Royals lead down to 19, 29-10 with 4:46 remaining in the second quarter. Richardson would score the last bucket of the half for Queens, giving them a 35-13 lead at the half.
 
Coming out of the half, both teams were going basket for basket but the Royals would continue to hold a sizable lead as they led 43-20 following a jumper by McKell Oliverio with 5:26 remaining in the third quarter. Brevard would then go on a 7-0 run to cut the lead down to 43-27 after a layup by Madison Lenox. The Royals wouldn't allow the Tornados to get back into the game as Karlesha Thompson's stole the ball and went coast-to-coast to give Queens a 62-40 lead with 4:27 remaining in the game. Oliverio scored the Royals last points of the game as her two free throws gave them the 69-48 win over the Tornados.
 
Madison Lenox was the Brevard's best player on the night as she had a double double, scoring 20 points and 14 rebounds. Katie Williams was the only other Tornados player to score in double digits as she added 10 points in the game.
 
The Royals have a quick turnaround this week as they play host to the Newberry Wolves on Wednesday, January 27th at 6:00 p.m.
