Royals see double on national stage

Indianapolis, Ind. - Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's swim teams took home a pair of national titles on March, 14, 2015, laying claim as the school's first team, national champions. In addition to taking the NCAA Division II swimming titles, the Royals swept the swimming individual awards taking the Swimmer of the Meet on both sides with Matthew Josa and Patricia Castro-Ortega, and the Coach of the Meet award with Head Coach Jeff Dugdale honored on both the men's and women's side.

Queens' victory in the water ended a 10 year run from Drury University men's swimming team, who took the second place finish. Equally as competitive on the women's side, Drury held six of the last eight national titles as they mirrored the men's overall placement.
Success found its way to the team due in large part to the qualification of several swimmers in the top heat as well as being balanced across all events. Seven events featured more than one Queens' swimmer in the top eight, pushing points onto the board for the Royals as they took 540.5 on the women's side and 433.5 on the men's.

Throughout the competition, Queens uprooted 12 national records in addition to laying claim on 17 first place finishes. Matthew Josa, Patricia Castro-Ortega, and Nicholas Arakelian led the team in the individual races taking responsibility for eight NCAA records. Twenty of the team's 23 attendees also garnered All-American status in at least one event.

Josa flew through the water to lay claim on not only three individual national record performances, but his 1:41.94 landed as the 19th all-time fastest for the 200 Yard Individual Medley and his 44.89 in the 100 Yard Butterfly earned him 10th all-time in the event. With another top tier race in the 200 Yard Butterfly, Josa clocked a 1:42.96 to give him his third record of the meet.

Castro-Ortega found four individual national record times as she touched first in every individual event she swam. The 200 Yard Individual Medley put Castro-Ortega at the top of the NCAA with a national record time of 1:58.60. She topped her own record in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a 1:45.27 touch. Finishing with half a pool length separation in the 500 Yard Freestyle, her time of 4:43.37 shattered the national record before she concluded with the 100 Yard Freestyle laying claim to the record with a 48.92.

Arakelian found his way into the history books taking the national record time in the 400 Yard Individual Medley. He finished nearly eight seconds faster than the pool clocking a 3:43.84. Arakelian's 500 Yard Freestyle finish would add an additional meet record to partner with the team's national times.

With four relay teams topping the record board, the Royals stood tall atop the podium in the men's 400 Yard Medley Relay, the women's 400 Yard Freestyle Relay and both 800 Yard Freestyle Relay teams.

The men's 400 Yard Medley Relay clocked a 3:08.07 on the second night of competition. John Suther, Niclas Eriksson, Josa, and Ben Taylor, respectively, surpassed the NCAA time by over two seconds while taking the first place finish with a second separation from the pool.

On the women's side, the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay exceeded the competition with a 3:18.75 as Castro-Ortega took lead in the race followed by Lillian Gordy, Alexandra Marshall, and Caroline Arakelian, respectively.

Sweeping the event, both the men's and women's 800 Yard Freestyle topped the national time. Castro-Ortega was lead off for the women's 800 relay, gaining nearly a four second lead. Widening the gap, Gordy took the second leg followed by McKenzie Stevens before C. Arakelian's anchor leg swim took a final touch of 7:14.69. The women's relay would also go down in Queens' history as the first female relay team to claim the top spot at nationals.

In a competitive race, the men's 800 freestyle relay team led with N. Arakelian followed by Ben Taylor and Hayden Kosater, respectively, narrowly holding the front spot ahead of Drury. Josa, taking the last leg of the race, touched with a 6:26.29 as the team grabbed the first place finish and national record.

N. Arakelian grabbed two more school records during his trip to nationals. His 1000 Yard Freestyle swim clocked an 8:58.47 for a first place finish and his 1650 Yard Freestyle took a 15:10.33. Lillian Gordy also found a school record in the 50 Yard Freestyle taking a 23.06. Alexandra Marshall would also pass the record as well coming into the wall with a 23.17.

Both the men's and women's 200 Yard Freestyle Relays secured new school records as Gordy, Marshall, Kristin Diemer, and Shane Knight, respectively, passed the old time of 1:32.84 with a 1:32.17 to take the school record. The men's side saw Eriksson, Taylor, Austin Sumrall, and Hayden Kosater, respectively, find the wall in a 1:19.25 to trump the previous time of 1:20.16.

Hannah Peiffer and Josa would add two more first place finishes to the overall team records as Peiffer took the 200 Yard Butterfly with a 1:59.06 and Josa took the 200 Yard Backstroke with a 1:41.45.

"Everything about this championship team embraces the values of Queens University of Charlotte," said Head Coach Jeff Dugdale. "Our student-athletes respect the vision to perform at the highest level academically and athletically. They believe in Queens and love it! The staff and I could not be more proud of the fact that Queens was responsible in bringing the city of Charlotte its first championship trophies. We would like to add a huge thank you to all who have supported us in our quest to build a successful championships program in the Queen City."

With the wrap-up of the 2015 season, the Queens' swim team will change gears as several athletes start their preparation for national competition including preparing for the 2016 Olympic Trials.

Royals swimming takes home a pair of national crowns

Indianapolis, Ind. - Taking their first NCAA National Team Titles, the men's and women's swim teams of Queens University of Charlotte took hold of the Division II Swimming and Diving Championship on Saturday, March 14, 2015, with an astonishing 540.5 on the women's side and 433.5 points on the men's side. The Royals grabbed a total of 12 national records during the four day competition with two more coming in tonight's events.

Queens would upset Drury University who had an impressive 10 year run on the men's side and took six of the last eight years on the women's side. Queens saw a total of 17 first place finishes in the schools first evern team national championship.

Matthew Josa took the men's Swimmer of the Meet award with Patricia Castro-Ortega taking the Women's Swimmer of the Meet Award. Head Coach Jeff Dugdale grabbed both the men's and women's Coach of the Meet Award to round out the Royals honorary trek to the title.

Patricia Castro-Ortega broke the first record of the evening, setting a new NCAA national record in the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 48.92 and adding to her list of four individual NCAA Standards.

Queens' second record of the evening fell in the women's 400 Yard Freestyle Relay which grabbed a 3:18.75. Castro-Ortega took lead in the race followed by Lillian Gordy, Alexandra Marshall, and Caroline Arakelian, respectively.

Nicholas Arakelian took a first place in the men's 1650 Yard Freestyle. His time took the school record with a 15:10.33 touch. Alex Menke joined Arakelian on the podium taking the third overall place for the meet with a 15:16.84.

Continuing to dominate the meet, Matthew Josa added the 200 Yard Backstroke to his list of accomplishments. Josa's swim of 1.41.45 took the first place spot for the competition.

Queens proved powerful in the 1650 Yard Freestyle with Meridith Boudreaux taking a sixth place touch at 16:53.23 with Kathryn Johnston following close behind with the 12th seeding time of 17:00.62. McKenzie Stevens added on more to the score board with 17:04.50 and a 14th overall rank.

Lillian Gordy combined with Castro-Ortega in the 100 Yard Freestyle finding her way to the wall for a seventh place finish with a time of 50.08.

Continuing to add points to the board, C. Arakelian raced for a third place finish in the 200 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:57.66.

Niclas Eriksson took the podium in the 200 Yard Breaststroke finding a second place touch. Eriksson flew threw the water to take a 1:55.65 time narrowly missing the gold medal.

The men's side of the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay found Hayden Kosater, Zachary Phelps, Eriksson, and Ben Taylor, respectively, taking seventh place with a time of 2:58.33.

Taking the top spot in the 100 Yard Freestyle, Alexandra Marshall touched first with a time of 50.59, adding to Royals' success in the consolation heat for ninth overall.

In a highly competitive race, Phelps, John Suther, and Taylor put points on the board for the team as they worked their way through the consolation heat for the 200 Yard Backstroke. Phelps took a 1:46.96 11th place touch. Suther took the 12th rank with a 1:47.10 while Taylor took 14th with a 1:48.50.

Continuing the success of the consolation heats, William Hicks found a third place touch in the 200 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:59.31, improving from his seed time of 2:01.32, a personal best.

Queens swimming pushes top times on last day of preliminaries

Indianapolis, Ind. -Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's swim teams continued the momentum from the week, as they geared up to take on the competition in the final preliminary races on Saturday, March 14, 2015. The Royals added another school record to the list as they challenged the competition on the last day of the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Royals powered off the blocks for the 100 Yard Freestyle with Patricia Castro-Ortega, Lillian Gordy, and Alexandra Marshall all securing top ten seeds for tonight's final. Castro-Ortega set a new school record with a time of 49.33 while grabbing the first place seed. Gordy finished close behind at 49.88 third place finish. Marshall secured a finals spot touching the wall with a time of 50.71 and taking the 10th overall slot.

Caroline Arakelian added another top seed to the Royals lineup for the night as she took control of the 200 Yard Breaststroke with a first place touch at 1:57.68.

Building upon the momentum, the men in the 200 Yard Backstroke added to the success of the morning with Matthew Josa, Ben Taylor, John Suther, and Zachary Phelps qualifying for finals. Josa secured the third seed overall with a time of 1:44.60 with Suther coming in at 1:46.65 and Phelps at 1:47.01. Suther and Phelps would take the 11th and 13th places for tonight's event, respectively, as Taylor rounded out the qualification coming in at No. 15 with a 1:47.89.

Niclas Eriksson continued to excel taking a first place race finish in the 200 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:57.73, securing the third overall seed. William Hicks qualified for finals clocking a time of 2:01.32. He would find a 15th overall ranking.

The women's 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team comprised of Castro-Ortega, Gordy, Marshall and Arakelian, respectively, finished with a 3:22.25 first place finish for their heat and number one overall spot for the day.

The men's side of the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay found Hayden Kosater, Phelps, Eriksson, and Taylor, respectively, battling the competition with a 2:57.57 second place finish in their heat and placing fifth overall leading into the finals.

With the race for the national title still up for grabs, the Royals look to hold their lead in an attempt to sweep the national stage. The finals begin at 6 p.m. tonight.

Queens holds top heading into last day

Friday's Results

Indianapolis, Ind. - Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's swim teams maintained their top placement after day three of competition at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships, securing 422.5 points on the women's side and 316.5 on the men's side. Friday, March 13, 2015, concluded with the Royals taking hold of six first place finishes with four displacing the national record.

In yet another national record swim, Patricia Castro-Ortega flew through the water to take a half a pool length victory in the 500 Yard Freestyle. Her event swim of 4:43.37 only further endorsed the Royals claim for the top as Lillian Gordy closed the event out with the second spot. Gordy's security of second place came with a 4:50.70 time.

Uprooting the 200 Yard Butterfly national record, Matthew Josa found nearly a second and a half of distance between himself and the competition taking a 1:42.96 for his third individual record of the meet.

Ending the day's performance, both 800 Yard Freestyle Relays set a new NCAA Division II standard as the team upset their tenth national record with the men's and women's event. Castro-Ortega was lead off for the women's 800 relay supply the squad with near a four second lead. Gordy took the second leg followed by McKenzie Stevens as both lengthened the gap. Caroline Arakelian closed the event taking the final touch at 7:14.69. The men's 800 freestyle relay team saw a tighter race as Nicholas Arakelian took lead-off followed by Ben Taylor and Hayden Kosater. Josa took the last leg of the race as the team found the wall in 6:26.29.

In a highly vied after race, Nicholas Arakelian grabbed the come-from-behind victory to out touch Victor Polyakov from West Chester with a 4:20.98 in the 500 Yard Freestyle. Arakelian's race ended with his last two 50-yard split times clocking under 26 seconds.

Taking the top spots in the 200 Yard Butterfly, Hannah Peiffer found the first place touch with a 1:59.06. Stevens nudged out Joyce Kwok from LIU Post for the second place finish keeping it all Royals at the top. Steven's performance gave her a 1:59.56 for the event.

Niclas Eriksson took the podium in the 100 Yard Breaststroke finding a third place touch. Eriksson glided through the water to take a 52.85 time narrowly missing the second place finish.

Peiffer continued to put points on the board for the team as she worked her way into the fourth overall seating for the 100 Yard Backstroke. Peiffer improved to a 54.44 to take the top-tier placement for the event.

Alex Menke found the ninth overall placement in the 500 Yard Freestyle improving into a 4:26.00 and taking first in the consolation heat. Zachary Phelps grabbed the 13th overall rank in the men's 100 Yard Backstroke with a 48.47. William Hicks, II gave the men's side one more placement with the 100 Breaststroke securing 12th overall rank with a 54.51.

The women's side added Kathryn Johnston to the list 500 Yard Freestyle with a 4:54.55 for tenth overall. Meridith Boudreaux followed Johnston with an 11th place tie with Brittany Bays, from Tampa, clocking a 4:56.49. A No. 16 rank fell to Kristin Diemer as she touched with a 58.50 in the 100 Yard Backstroke.

Royals finish the search for a national title tomorrow as preliminary races begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by the finals at 6 p.m. that night.

Queens swimming continues to excel in preliminaries

Indianapolis, Ind. - Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's swim teams continued to control the water, as they took to the lanes in the preliminary races on March 13, 2015. The Royals added top times to the list as they continued to make qualifications for the finals of day three at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Royals took to the lanes in the 500 Yard Freestyle as Patricia Castro-Ortega took the top seed the night's finals with a 4:48.04. Lillian Gordy followed to take the third overall spot with a 4:53.80 punching her ticket for the top seed. Kathryn Johnston and Meridith Boudreaux added to more to the lineup grabbing 10th and 11th, respectively. Johnston would clock a 4:55.95 as Boudreaux clocked a 4:56.04.

Matthew Josa took control on the men's 200 Yard Butterfly, going 1:43.85 and taking first place in his heat and the top qualifying spot overall.

The pairing of McKenzie Stevens and Hannah Peiffer placed first and second in their respective heat with Stevens touching at 2:01.44 and Peiffer at 2:01.46. Both found spots in the top finals heat, as Stevens stands second and Peiffer at third.

Nicholas Arakelian and Alex Menke added to the morning success, knocking down the competition with two top finishes in the 500 Yard Freestyle. Arakelian took the fourth final seed with a time of 4:25.82, while Menke followed closely at 4:28.05 for 10th place in tonight's races.

Continuing the dominance, Peiffer found herself in the top for the 100 Yard Backstroke, clocking in for sixth placement with a 55.38. Additionally, Kristin Diemer qualified for finals with a time of 55.87 taking 14th overall.

Zachary Phelps found a ninth seed for the 100 Yard Backstroke, touching the wall at 47.93.

The 100 Yard Breaststroke put two more at the top for the Royals with Niclas Eriksson and William Hicks, II making the cut. Eriksson jumped to fourth with his 53.82 as Hicks clocked a time of 54.25 for a 10th place seeding.

The competition continues tonight as the team battles in the day three finals.

Royals move up in team standings

Thursday's Results

Indianapolis, Ind. - Launching to the top, Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's swim teams excelled on day two of the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships securing the top spot on the women's side with 280 points and second place on the men's side with 202.5, trailing off the lead by only 3.5 points.

Adding another four national records to the list, Queens saw records fall from Nicholas Arakelian in the 400 Yard Individual Medley, Matthew Josa in the 100 Yard Butterfly and Patricia Castro-Ortega in the 200 Yard Freestyle.

The men's 400 Yard Medley Relay took the fourth record off the wall with a 3:08.07. John Suther, Niclas Eriksson, Josa, and Ben Taylor, respectively, brought down the prior national record by over two seconds claiming the honor with a second separation from the pool.

Arakelian dominated the men's 400 Individual Medley toppling the competition by nearly eight seconds and surpassing his previous record by nearly three seconds. Arakelian's performance brought him to the wall in a 3:43.84 record time.

Josa demolished the 100 Yard Butterfly launching to not only the top of Division II history but landed as the 10th all-time fastest for the race, smashing the record with a 44.89.

Castro-Ortega's 200 Yard Freestyle time topped her national record from the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship the month prior. Castro-Ortega touched with a 1:45.27 to further secure her spot at the top of the event.

Castro-Ortega was not alone in the 200 Yard Freestyle as Lillian Gordy and McKenzie Stevens made a statement, hoisting themselves into the top of the event. Gordy found the second place spot for the 1-2 finish with a 1:47.84. Stevens would drive into the wall moments later with a 1:49.04 taking fourth place off the board.

Both 200 Yard Freestyle Relays leaped off the blocks to grab new school records. Lillian Gordy, Alexandra Marshall, Kristin Diemer, and Shane Knight, respectively, passed the old time of 1:32.84 with a 1:32.17 to take the school record. The men's side saw Eriksson, Taylor, Austin Sumrall, and Hayden Kosater, respectively, find the wall in a 1:19.25 to trump the previous time of 1:20.16.

Taylor clocked a 1:36.07 in the 200 Yard Freestyle taking the bronze placement in the event. Rounding out the event, Kosater found the wall in 1:38.57 for the 15th overall rank.

The women's 100 Yard Butterfly featured two Queens' swimmers in the finals as Peiffer and Marshall took the fourth and sixth spots, respectively. Peiffer found a 54.28 for the event as Marshall followed close behind with a 54.37.

In a narrow race to the wall, the women's 400 Individual Medley clocked a 3:41.03 third place finish from Hannah Peiffer, Caroline Arakelian, Alexandra Marshall, and Castro-Ortega, respectively.

Arakelian would find herself in the top heat again this time for the 400 Individual Medley. She took a 4:25.91 finish for eight place.

Queens heads into the day three preliminary races tomorrow morning. The event is set to start at 10:30 a.m.

Day two preliminaries prove favorable for Royals

Thursday's Preliminary Results

Indianapolis, Ind. - Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's swim teams continued their control of the meet they took possession of two more meet record times in the preliminary races on March 12, 2015. In addition, the Royals added a school record time to the morning's events to set the team up for the finals later today.

Knocking down another NCAA meet record, Patricia Castro-Ortega flew through the water in the 200 Yard Freestyle taking a meet record time of 1:46.72. The Royals found their second record shattering event in the men's 400 Yard Medley Relay. The team of John Suther, Niclas Eriksson, Matthew Josa, and Zachary Phelps, respectively, took a first place finish and the meet record with a time of 3:09.72.

In addition to the meet record swims, two more Queens' swimmers took the top seed for the finals. Nicholas Arakelian would lead off for the Royals grabbing first in the men's 400 Yard Individual Medley with a 3:47.75 time. Josa found a top tier seat in tonight's finals for the 100 Yard Butterfly breaking his seed time with a 45.61 finish.

Mirroring the family connection, Caroline Arakelian aided the Royals in a strong start to the day finding a fourth overall seeding in the 400 Yard Individual Medley with a 4:20.33.

Queens took charge in the 100 Yard Butterfly with Alexandra Marshall and Hannah Peiffer touching at first and third, respectively, in their heat as Marshall touched with a 54.55 and Peiffer with a 54.64. These times placed both Marshall and Peiffer within the top ten overall with the No. 4 and No. 6 spots.

The women's relay comprised of Lillian Gordy, Alexandra Marshall, Kristin Diemer, and Shane Knight, respectively, finished with a 1:32.84 first place finish for their heat and a second overall spot in the finals.

The men's side of the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay found Niclas Eriksson, Ben Taylor, Austin Sumrall and Hayden Kosater, respectively, surpassing the competition with a 1:20.16 first place touch in their heat and placing third overall leading in the finals.

In additions to Castro-Ortega's run in the 200 Yard Freestyle, Lillian Gordy and McKenzie Stevens would place second in their respective heats with Gordy touching in at 1:47.85 and Stevens at 1:49.41. Both found spots in the top finals heat, as Gordy stands in third and Stevens in fifth tonight.

Benjamin Taylor took control on the men's 200 Yard Freestyle, going 1:35.98 and taking first place in his heat and fourth overall.

The women's 400 yard medley relay team of Arakelian, Castro-Ortega, Peiffer and Kristin Diemer, respectively, would find the wall with a 3:43.23 to secure them a third seed placement.

The competition will continue tonight as they fight to stay atop the leader boards.

Queens finds new records in first day of competition

Wednesday's Results

Indianapolis, Ind. - Flying off the blocks, Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's swim teams took a fourth place ranking on the men's side and a second place ranking on the women's after the first day of competition at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships on March 11, 2015. Queens completed the day with two new national record times from Patricia Castro-Ortega and Matthew Josa in the 200 Yard Individual Medley.

Setting a new record this morning, Castro-Ortega followed with an even faster mark in the 200 Yard Individual Medley with a stunning 1:58.60 finish. Josa mirrored on the men's side breaking the record time he set that morning with a new national time of 1:41.94. Josa's time not only took the top time in Division II but would fall as the 19th all-time fastest for the event.

Caroline Arakelian gave the team a 1-2 sweep in the 200 Yard Individual Medley taking the silver with a 2:00.35. Hannah Peiffer gave the Royals their third ranking in the event grabbing eight in the top heat with a 2:03.65.

Ben Taylor found the wall in a 1:47.49 tying for 5th place in the 200 Yard Individual Medley to partner with Josa as the Royals put two in the top heat on the men's side.

Two school records fell during the day's performance as Nicholas Arakelian took gold in the 1000 Yard Freestyle clocking 8:58.47 and coming just shy of the national time. Alex Menke took a fourth place finish for the race finding the wall with a 9:09.93.

The other school record went to Lillian Gordy for the 50 Yard Freestyle, topping the time in both the preliminary races and in the finals. Her finals time of 23.06 holds as the new Queens record. Alexandra Marshall would also surpass the previous record taking first in the consolation heat with a 23.17 to tie Gordy's preliminary time that morning.

The women's 1000 Yard Freestyle put Kathryn Johnston in the top five grabbing fourth overall with a 10:03.19. Meridith Boudreaux and McKenzie Stevens grabbed 10th and 13th, respectively, for the event. Boudreaux finished with a 10:06.71 while Stevens took a 10:10.77.

In the consolation heat for the men's 50 Yard Freestyle found Niclas Eriksson with a 13th overall finish, 5th for the heat, with a 20.30 and Hayden Kosater took the 16th overall finish with a 20.45.

Queens concluded the night with the women's 200 Yard Medley Relay securing a 6th place finish from Peiffer, Emma Durante, Madeleine Wallmon, and Marshall, respectively. The team took a 1:42.55 finish.

Records fall for Royals to kick off NCAA Nationals

Indianapolis, Ind. - It was a dominate start for the Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's swim teams as they took hold of two national record times in the preliminary races on March 11, 2015. The Royals added one more school record time to the morning's events to set the team up for the finals, set to kick-off later today for the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Royals' two national records fell in the 200 Yard Individual Medley as Patricia Castro-Ortega opened the meet with a 1:58.91 time. Matthew Josa took the national record in the next event with a 1:43.18 finish for the 200 Individual Medley.

Queens launched three more athletes into the top heat for the 200 Individual Medley with Caroline Arakelian taking the third spot with a 2:01.82 and Hannah Peiffer grabbing a seventh seed with a 2:03.36. On the men's side, Benjamin Taylor found the sixth spot in the top heat with a 1:47.54.

Lillian Gordy took the school record for the team in the 50 Yard Freestyle jumping into fifth for the preliminary races with a 23.17 finish. Alexandra Marshall also found her spot in the finals tonight taking a 15th-ranking with a 23.49.

The men's 50 Yard Freestyle saw Hayden Kosater and Niclas Eriksson secure a second heat placement taking the 10th and 13th seeds, respectively. Both swimmers sit tied for their placement as Kosater clocked a 20.25 and Eriksson clocked a 20.28 for the event.

The preliminary races would finish with the 200 Yard Medley Relay as the women's team of Peiffer, Emma Durante, Madeleine Wallmon, and Marshall, respectively, took a fifth place finish with a 1:42.42.

The finals begin tonight at 6 p.m. starting with the conclusion of the men's and women's 1000 Yard Freestyle.
