Britt takes a grand slam home opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Charlotte, N.C. – In their home opener and Pink Cancer Awareness game, Queens University of Charlotte softball (6-19, 0-2 SAC) found 17 total runs in two games as they split the double-header against Pfeiffer University (14-13, 3-1 CC) on Friday, March 20, 2015. Queens took the first game with 11 runs to the Falcons seven as Pfeiffer took the second match up 10-6.

As the team found a total of 16 hits in the first game, Whitney Britt took credit for four equaling her runs for the night and bringing in six other Royals. Britt had two homeruns during the game with a grand slam in the second inning and a solo homerun in the fifth. Lyndey McCurry grabbed not only the win on the mound but found a solo home run in the bottom of the third giving her two runs for the night.

McCurry (2-7) pitched 4.1 innings before returning back to the mound in the sixth with no outs. She faced 22 batters during her time, taking two strikeouts and giving up only two earned runs and four hits.

Sam Jarmusch (4-4) took the loss for Pfeiffer seeing two complete innings with seven hits, five earned runs, and one strike out.

Game two featured Britt who once again knocked one over the wall this time with Micaela Hayes on base to give the team their first scoring play of the game. Britt led the team once again in hits finding two in addition to adding two runs. The team as a whole found eight hits in the second matchup as Hayes was the only other Royal to hit her way to base twice. Queens would leave four runners on base as the Falcons failed to return ten.

Sydney Poole (6-3) grabbed the win for Pfeiffer going 4.0 innings with six hits, five earned runs and only one walk.

Catelyn Pressley (3-6) suffered the loss pitching for 1.2 innings giving up six runs and five hits. Evie Scott would follow her going 4.1 innings with nine hits that resulted in three runs. Scott had four strikeouts and two walks during her time.

Game one started with, Britt grabbing a grand slam to bring home Hayes, Robyn Levine and McCurry, putting the team up 7-2 score in the second inning. McCurry would find her own single homerun at her next at bat as the Royals closed out the third inning with a 10-2 lead. However, not out of the game Pfeiffer put up five runs in the top of the fifth to bring the team back within three. McCurry would step back onto the mound to finish her game keeping the score clean for the remaining time.

Game two favored the Falcons as they had three home runs in the first two innings. Rachel Crowder set things in motion for the team as she hit one over the wall with the bases loaded at her first at bat. Jessica Jackson followed with a homerun in the second inning brining home Sadie Saine before Chandler Walker hit one for distance at the very next at bat. Finally settled down, Queens took the next three innings finding a pair of scoring plays in each to bring the game to an 8-6 Falcons' lead at the end of the fifth inning. Pfeiffer, however, added two more runs to their score in the seventh to take the game.

The Royals are back in action tomorrow as they face Tusculum at home. The double-header is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
