Royals split double header against Francis Marion

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Florence, S.C. – Queens University of Charlotte softball team (5-15) split the day's double header against Francis Marion (13-9) on Thursday, March 12, 2015. Queens took the first match up with a 3-1 score before Francis Marion grabbed game two with a 3-2 victory.

The Royals took equaling hits in both games as they found a total of 12 for the day. Taylor Cheek led the offense with three total hits, finding two in the first game. Francis Marion would find total of 13 hits for the day, seven coming in their winning matchup. Shannan Lopez took front for the Patriots' batters with 4 total hits and scoring twice.

Catelyn Presley (3-4) led the Royals pitching staff going six innings in the first game to grab the win. Presley gave up six hits, one earned run, struck-out two, and walked two, during her time on the mound. Evie Scott would come in to finish the game, grabbing a strikeout in the seventh inning and keeping the Patriots off the bags.

Scott would start the second game for the Royals pitching 3.2 innings. Her times on the mound lead to four hits, two earned runs, three walks while seeing two batters return to the dugout during the second game. Lyndey McCurry (0-3) took the loss going 2.2 innings giving up an earned run, three hits and two walks.

Katie Carnes (5-1) stood the mound for the entire first game, giving up only one earned run for the Royals' six hits. Carnes took six strike outs, walked one batter, and gave up one hit-by-pitch. Kaitlin Munda (5-5) mirrored the time of Carnes going all seven innings for the second showing between the schools. Munda gave up one earned run for six hits, grabbed one strikeout and gave up no walks.

Although both teams left six runners left on bases during the first game, the Royals kept seven Patriots from finding home in the second matchup leaving four on themselves. Although Queens managed to find their way onto base in both games, a tie in game two would cost them the sweep as Lopez grabbed a walk-off double to bring home Makala Barnhart to split the series.

The day started as bunt from Samantha Martinez put Taylor Cheek in scoring position for the Royals. She would be the first player to see home plate as Micaela Hayes brought her in with a single through the right side. Two batters later, Robyn Levine moved Martinez around to third base where she was able to capitalize off of an error to score, bringing the game to 2-0.

At the top of the sixth, the Royals put another run on the board as Cheek reached base on a fielding error, giving Amanda Meade room to score. Unable to keep the shutout, Francis Marion found their run at the bottom of the sixth as Carnes drove one into centerfield to bring home Lopez.

Game two started again with the Royals taking the lead early. Venus Gonzalez found a double off a hit into left field. McCurry would move Gonzalez to third before Cheek brought her in off a sacrificed bunt. Abby Lathan immediately followed with a drive out into center field giving Jasmyn Lindsay a chance to reach home.

Refusing to falter, Francis Marion found their tying run in the bottom of the fourth as a sacrifice fly from Shelby Matthews brought Lopez in from third. Taylor Fain took the next scoring play, capitalizing off of a wild pitch. The two teams battled defensively for the remainder of the game before Lopez grabbed a walk off double to secure the win.

The Royals turn their attention to Lincoln Memorial for the team's first conference match up. They travel to Harrogate, Tenn., on Sunday, March 15, 2015 for a 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. double header.
