Late run forces Queens loss at Brevard

Box Score Brevard, N.C. – In a fluctuating game, Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team fell to Brevard College on Saturday, February 7, 2015, after a late run turned the tide giving the Tornado an 80-71 victory. Continuing to take charge of the floor, Lacey Singletary secured another double-double finding 16 points to lead team offensive while contributing a career high of 15 rebounds to the cause.

McKell Oliverio found her own rhythm in the game knocking down 14 points including making all four of her free-throws. Singletary added to her tally with two more blocks bringing her total to 63 for the year.

Brevard took the turnover battle forcing the Royals into 21 give-a-ways while only giving up nine of their own. The second half would be the difference in the game as 16 of the Royals turnovers fell in the last twenty minutes of play. However, Queens found the drive to stay in the game, holding the lead until 10 minutes into the second half. Time eventually caught the Royals as Brevard out-scored the teams in the final moments of the game.

Brevard sought both Katie Williams and Madison Lenox on offense, who combined to take half of the Tornado's points. Williams tallied 27 points for the night with Lenox following with 21. Lenox added another three steals and four rebounds to her performance.

It was a tight start for both teams as each echoed shots in the first minutes of the game. However, a 9-2 run capped by Oliverio gave Queens a nice 14-7 hold after five minutes of play. The seven point difference did not remain for long as Brevard found their tying point at the 12:20 mark. Brevard eventually took the lead with 4:19 left in the half, but only briefly. In an all-around effort, the Royals rallied to take back the game, going into half with a 48-45 lead.

As both teams again took a level start, Queens managed to hold a narrow lead with their largest gap of the half coming off back-to-back baskets from Carmen Richardson for a 56-50 score. With two minutes left on the clock, Brevard found an 8-1 run putting the game out of reach for the Royals.

In another game on the road, Queens heads to Wingate on Wednesday, February 11, to face the Bulldogs at 6 p.m.
