Royals drop two in Armstrong State Pirate Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Savannah, Ga. – In  two tough back-to-back games, Queens University of Charlotte softball went 0-2 on the first day of the Armstrong State Pirate Classic falling to Mount Olive (4-2 overall) 9-4 and to 8th-ranked Armstrong State (1-2 overall) 9-1, in a five inning game, on Saturday, February 7, 2015.

Hanna Hasker found three hits for the Royals against Mount Olive in addition to brining in a Queens' runner in both games. Abby Lathan defensively made a play for nine outs with six coming against the Trojans.

Although the Queens' pitching staff struck out five batters in the Mount Olive game, the Trojans played aggressive stealing six times with the Royals unable to catch an attempt. Both teams in the game found 12 hits with Queens denying nine Trojan runners from crossing home plate while unable to bring in eight of their own. Whitney Britt was the only Queens player in the game to a hit a double and a sacrifice fly.

No. 8 nationally ranked Armstrong State took 13 hits against the Royals as they found a score in all five innings of the game. Although the game fell to the Pirates, Queens found three hits brining in Jasmyn Lindsay for their lone run. The Royals would strand five of their own runners while forcing seven Pirates from making their way home.

Queens started the day against the Trojans of Mount Olive who took an early lead with Tiffany Hawley finding a double to bring in Beth Overman in the first inning. Strong defense kept the Trojans off the board for the next inning but Kelsey Akers hit one over the fence to find a two run security of Mount Olive. However, heading into the fifth the Royals looked for responses as the Trojans put four more on the board before the third out.

Struggling to find their own offensive stride, Hasker broke through with a finely placed ball into right field bringing Micaela Hayes around the bases to score. Lyndey McCurry finding a similar route, brought Taylor Rosenbalm across the plate to bring the score to a 6-2 Trojan lead. The Royals would give up three more runs in the top of the sixth before finding one last score themselves with a sacrifice fly into center field by Whitney Britt to bring the game to a close.

In game two, a single from Autumn Parrish brought in two runners in the bottom of the first. Responding immediately Hasker's sacrifice fly put the team down by just one but Armstrong State would mirror the result. As the game headed into the third inning, Queens managed to reach two onto base, but both would stay.

Struggling against a strong pitching core, Queens was unable to find a hit in the fourth however, Armstrong State showed why they earned national recognition with three more runs. Michelle Breen would be responsible for two of those runners crossing home with a single into right field. The game would end in the fifth with Armstrong State bringing two more runners home for a 9-1 win.

Queens continues day two of the Armstrong State Pirate Classic facing Mount Olive at 10 a.m. followed by Armstrong State at 2 p.m.
