Windy night draws problems for Queens softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Aiken, S.C. – Battling the furious wind, Queens University of Charlotte's softball team (1-11) met the University of South Carolina Aiken (2-0) for a mid-week double-header on Thursday, February 12, 2015, as the Pacers took the series. USC Aiken took hold of the first game taking the winning run in the bottom of the sixth for a 2-1 lead. Seeing eight innings in game two, a sacrifice fly into right field brought home the winning run for a 4-3 score.

USC Aiken reached on the board first, placing a sacrifice fly into right field for Sydney Murphy to find her way home. The Royals took their tying run in the top of the fourth as Robyn Levine took advantage of an error. However, Murphy again found the plate off another sacrifice fly.

Facing extra innings after a 3-3 score through the seventh, Queens battled to grab two outs on USC Aiken but a sacrifice fly into right field brought Magan Thrower to home plate for the win. The Royals managed to get two runners on base in the at bat prior, but could not bring them home.

Lyndey McCurry (0-2) was credited with the loss after pitching six innings with only two hits, two walks, and five strikeouts. Queens would leave six runners on base forcing the Pacers to leave four of their own. The team found four hits with Taylor Rosenbalm and Levine splitting the task.

In game two, Queens grabbed nine hits with Levine, Rosenbalm, and Taylor Cheek finding a pair. Abby Lathan was credited in bringing home two runs for the team. Catelyn Presley (1-4) took the loss for the Royals pitching crew after 2.1 innings giving up only three hits, one run, no walks, and one strikeout.

Taylor Morgan (2-0) found the win for USC Aiken in both games. In the first matchup she pitched seven innings with six strikeouts, no walks, and one hit-by-pitch. Game two saw Morgan pitched 3.2 innings with three hits, no runs, three walks, and three strike outs.

Queens travels to Greenwood, S.C., this Sunday to take on Lander in a double header as the team takes the field at 1 p.m.
