Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte Women's basketball team was on the road as they travelled to take on the Wolves of Newberry College. Despite a strong showing in the first quarter, the Royals fell to the Wolves 76-49, dropping them to 2-3 on the season.
Leading the Royals in scoring tonight was
Sheridan Pressley who scored a career-high 13 points as she went 8-for-8 from the free throw line. She was followed by
Erin Brundage who scored eight points and
Carmen Richardson who scored seven in the game.
As a team, Queens shot only 25.9% from the field in the game, but they did tally 15 offensive rebounds and scored 19 points off of turnovers. The Royals did very well from the free throw line tonight as they went 14-of-15 from the charity stripe.
Queens would take their first lead of the game (7-5) following layup by
Maggie Stewart with 6:38 remaining in the first quarter. The Royals extended their lead to 13-7 with 3:14 left in the first quarter after Richardson made a layup. Newberry would then go on to score 21 straight points on a run that would last until the 3:08 mark of the second quarter. The run was broken up when
McKell Oliverio drained a three pointer to make the score 28-16 in favor of the Wolves. Richardson would score the last bucket of the half with a three pointer with one second remaining made the score 33-19 at the half.
Newberry started the second half on a tear as Samantha Creed drained a three pointer followed by Kirsten Dunsmore's back-to-back layups to make the score 40-19 with 8:01 remaining in the third quarter. The Royals continue to battle in the second half and would go on an 8-2 run midway through the third quarter following two made free throws by Pressley to make the score 53-31 with 2:24 remaining in the third quarter. Unfortunately the Wolves shooting would continue to be strong for the remainder of the game, as the Royals would fall to Newberry.
Creed led the Wolves in scoring with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting; she also tallied five rebounds and five assists in the game. Nicola Handreck and Meg Essex each scored 12 points to pace Newberry in the game.
The Royals will return to the floor on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 as they match up against Johnson C. Smith University at 6:00 p.m. in the Levine Center.
