Royals Win Season Opener Over Barton

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte Women's Basketball team started their season off with a 75-62 victory on Friday, November 13, 2015 against the Bulldogs of Barton College.
 
Carmen Richardson would lead the Royals with 20 points on the evening; she also tallied six assists for the Royals. McKell Oliverio was second on the team with 19 points; she shot 9-11 from the field to go along with eight rebounds. Maggie Stewart would lead the Royals with 11 rebounds on the night to go along with nine points and a block.
 
The Royals shot 50.9% from the field and 20 of their made shots were assisted. Queens also scored 36 points in the paint on the night and forced 13 turnovers. This was the first time that the Royals have defeated Barton since 2009.
 
The Royals and Bulldogs were entrenched in a battle in the first quarter as the game. The Bulldogs came out to a 5-2 lead to start the game, but Queens came roaring back as McKell Oliverio scored a layup and was fouled on the play. She drained her free throw to even the score at 5-5. The remainder of the first quarter continued to be back and forth as the score at the end of the quarter was 18-16 in favor of Barton. The Royals scored 10 of their 16 points in the paint in the first quarter.
 
Barton began the second quarter with a three pointer made by Taura Jones followed by a steal and a layup by Tatyana Jackson to bring the score to 23-16 for the Bulldogs. Queens would come back and tie the game at 23-23 after a three pointer made by Carmen Richardson. The Royals would go on an 8-1 run to take control of the second half and they never looked back as they rolled out to a 39-32 lead at the half. Queens shot 62.1% from the field in the first half with 11 shots being assisted.
 
The Bulldogs started the third quarter off in a hurry, going on a 12-2 run that started with a layup by Caila Carter to bring the score to 44-41 in favor of the Bulldogs. The Royals would answer with a small run of their own (6-2) to make the score 47-46 with 3:58 remaining in the third quarter. At the end of the quarter, Queens and Barton would be tied up at 52 after Sheridan Pressley made one of her two free throws.
 
Queens would regain control of the game once again in the fourth quarter. The Royals defense closed down on Barton as they only allowed the Bulldogs to score 10 points in the quarter. Maggie Stewart made a layup as she was fouled and made the free throw to give the Royals a 71-60 lead. The Royals would continue to have a stranglehold on the Barton offense as they continued on to the 75-62 victory.
 
Kianna Wynn led the Bulldogs with 26 points and 12 rebounds on the evening followed by Caila Carter who had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Queens hosts day two of the South Atlantic Conference versus Conference Carolinas Challenge tomorrow as they match up against the University of Mount Olive. The Royals will also be raising money and collecting shoes for the Samaritans Feet Organization.
