Royals split double-header season opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Milledgeville, Ga. – Queens University of Charlotte softball (1-1) started the season with the Bobcat Blast hosted by Georgia College & State University (1-1) on Saturday, January 31, 2015, going one and one for the day. The Royals held on for a 9-8 lead in the second game to battle back after falling in the first to the Bobcats 4-2.

The Royals started the first two innings of the 2015 season finding runs. Whitney Britt would be the first Royal to find home plate taking advantage of a passed ball in the first inning. The moment would not last for long as the Bobcats' Abi LeRoy reached on an error, before two batters later working her way home. As the Royals returned to bat, Kayla Hall found a hole on the right side to bring Amanda Meade home putting the team back in the lead 2-1. A lead they would hold through the fourth inning. Heading into the bottom of the fifth, Queens would send two Georgia College runners home after a walk with bases loaded followed by a hit by pitch to take a 3-2 lead. Holland Coursey topped off the inning for the Bobcats with a sacrifice fly into right field to bring come Coursey.

It would be Georgia College to start the second game as the Bobcats' Taylor Campbell hit a single up the middle to bring in Frankie Walls. It took the Royals until the bottom of the second to find their tying run as Abby Lathan scored after Lyndey McCurry took a similar shot to Campbell's. Finding their stride, the Bobcats struggled to retire the Queens batters in the bottom of the third. With a single down the left hand side of the field by Lathan, both Taylor Rosenbalm and Robyn Levine crossed the plate before the play would end with Lathan making her way to second base. Next batter up, Taylor Cheek batted in a run before finding the plate herself with a triple from McCurry. Queens would bring in three more runs with McCurry, Samantha Martinez and Rosenbalm scoring, before the inning would conclude taking a 9-1 lead.

Refusing to cave after giving up eight runs and six hits in the third, Georgia College found some magic of their own taking advantage of a wild pitch and a single from Walls who brought home two runners. Heading into the fifth, Georgia College again found two additional runs to bring the team within three as Coursey hit a single through the left side for Kristen Humphries, and Danielle Berstein singled for Cassidy Rice. The Bobcats found two more runs in the sixth as Baylee Hall scored on a wild pitch and Emily Robertson reached home on a walk, but they would fall one shy. Queens closed out the game stranding two Bobcats on base.

The team heads back to the field tomorrow for day two as they take on Columbus State University.
