Box Score Charlotte, NC – Queens University of Charlotte (4-7, 1-2 SAC) struck first on Saturday, September 20, 2014, in the 3-1 loss to Lincoln Memorial (7-4, 3-0 SAC), but was unable to close out the match as the Railsplitters took the 19-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-19 win.
Sydney Kunz would take a double-double for the match with a new career high 42 assists and a tying career high of 16 digs.
Rebecca Cochran would have a career high of 13 kills in the match accompanied by eight digs and one block.
Megan Mancini would place behind Kunz with 15 digs of her own. Kunz and Mancini combined accounted for over fifty percent of the overall digs for the Royals.
The Royals posted 47 total kills, four aces and 61 digs for the night leading to a .140 attacking percentage. The Railsplitters took 49 kills, four aces, and 71 digs taking hold of a .204 attacking percentage. Both teams grabbed 14 block assists throughout the four sets.
Kiera Holland led Lincoln Memorial with 15 kills on the day only to be followed closely by teammate Brooke Fleeman (14). Casey Mense would lead the Railsplitters in digs tallying 25 while Abby Cash would take home 36 assists.
A strong showing from the Royals kicked off the match as Queens moved out into a 9-3 lead with three back-to-back kills from Cochran. The Railsplitters would push back to come within one point, 15-14, however a hung swing from the Royals featuring two kills apiece from Cochran and
Elizabeth Bialkowski would sit Queens in a 22-16 position.
Alex Thompson would slam the door on the set with a resounding shot for a 25-19 Queens's victory.
It was Lincoln Memorial who had the run to start off the second set. The Railsplitters jumped out to a 9-4 lead after a couple of errors befell the Royals side. Although the Royals were able match the Railsplitters side for points thereafter, Queens would be unable to close the gap. Queens had a small boost towards the end due to a couple of Lincoln Memorial errors and a kill from
Jessica Raines; however Railsplitters would capitalize on their early lead and take the set 25-19.
Lincoln Memorial would again take an early lead for the third set causing a 4-1 Royals timeout.
Katrina Kirby would drive one through and grab an ace for the Royals to help tie the game (7-7). Both teams would shuffle for the lead, however Lincoln Memorial would take a 7-3 run to cap off the set 25-19.
Queens would again find themselves facing an early timeout (4-0) but like the set prior would force their way back into a tie (8-8). Queens would take their second timeout in hopes of stopping a current 4-1 run for the Railsplitters at 13-9, but would slowly start to lose ground heading into the final third of the game.
Katie Schoenrock and Cochran each punched in two for the Royals towards the end but were unable to prevent a 25-19 loss in the fourth set.
The Royals will travel on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 to face a strong (9-1, 2-0 SAC) Wingate team.
