CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte Assistant Athletic Director for Communications, Phylicia Short, is excited to announce the addition of
Angel Maldonado to her staff as the Assistant Director for Athletic Communications. Maldonado, a 2024 graduate of Charlotte, returns to the Queen City following one year as an Assistant Director of Athletic Communications at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.
"We are excited to have Angel join our team at Queens," said Short. "His previous experiences will allow him to hit the ground running, and his passion and enthusiasm for telling the stories of student-athletes will be a welcome addition to the department.
While at Kenyon, Maldonado served as the main or co-contact for all 21 varsity sports, which included producing game recaps, previews, feature stories, and award releases on the main webpage. Maldonado managed all in-game statistics using NCAA Live Stats, StatCrew, and PresoStats while also coordinating game day media operations, including press box logistics, stat distributions, broadcast support, and public address announcing. Maldonado brings supervisory experience, having trained a staff of more than 20 student interns.
Prior to moving to Gambier, Maldonado spent one year at Guilford College as an Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant. Maldonado served as the primary media contact for men's soccer, men's lacrosse, men's and women's tennis, triathlon, swimming and diving, and women's basketball. Maldonado served as the official scorer and ensured compliance and accuracy with the NCAA and ODAC. In addition, Maldonado produced dynamic multimedia content, including video highlights, graphics, press releases, and game recaps.
Maldonado got his start in college athletics in the Charlotte Athletic Department. Maldonado began his sports career as a social media intern, where he executed gameday functions, including social media management and video content for the men's and women's basketball teams at Charlotte. In addition, Maldonado assisted the technical services team as a student broadcast operator, where he managed broadcasting, camera operations, and highlight presentation at different venues.
At the 2024 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, Maldonado served as a media relations intern and helped organize press interactions and credentialing. During games, Maldonado maintained statistics, ensuring proper allocation of data to the necessary parties.
"Returning to the city that first gave me a taste of this profession is truly a blessing," said Maldonado. "Joining an institution that is not only thriving across every sport, but also continuing to grow each day, makes this opportunity even more meaningful. I am honored to join such an experienced staff of professionals and cannot wait to see what the year has in store."
A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Maldonado earned his Bachelor of Arts in Mass Media Communications from Charlotte. He went on to attain his Master's in International Sports Management from Guilford College the following year. Maldonado is a member of the Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity and served as the Social Chair.
