Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte fell to 1-2 on the season in women's soccer action this evening, falling 2-1 to No. 10 University of North Georgia at the Queens Sports Complex. The Nighthawks, also ranked first in the southeast region, improve to 3-0 on the season.
Despite Queens'
Sydney Michelin getting the first shot off in the game, the Royals found themselves outshot 8-1 at the end of the half. North Georgia's first goal would come in the 28
th minute when Sophia Matonak put the ball in the upper right 90 just out of Queens'
Tori Danchak's reach on a free kick from just outside of the box.
Coming out of the break with fresh legs, the Royals were able to equalize things early in the second half when forward
Kelli Gottry connected on a shot in the 49
th. Gottry dribbled through two defenders up the middle to face North Georgia's keeper one-one-one before curving the ball into the goal for the score.
A pair of shots from the Nighthawks soon followed Gottry's goal, one heading straight for the back of the net before defender
Alexis Landers ran in to the collect the team save.
North Georgia still did not let up the pressure, taking another pair of shots in the 56
th and 57
th minute that were turned away by Queens'
Emily Mager, who subbed in at the half. However, the Nighthawks would put one in the net at minute 60 when a cross was deflected by Mager and booted into the goal by North Georgia's Jacy Ramey.
With the Royals trailing 2-1, Gottry found herself with another opportunity to tie things up as North Georgia's Mallory Sayre misjudged a ball leaving the net wide open. Gottry ran in to lob the ball over the keeper into the net, just missing to the left by inches.
The Nighthawks finished the game with 18 shots compared to the Royals' six. Danchak collected five saves in goal, while Mager totaled two.
Tonight's game was the first in history between the Nighthawks and the Royals.
The Royals are on the road this weekend at the Clayton State Invitational. They will face West Alabama on Saturday and the Lakers on Monday.
