Queens rolls past Newberry

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte improved to 4-0 in South Atlantic Conference play tonight after picking up an 18-5 victory over Newberry College in women's lacrosse action. The Royals now sit at 9-4 on the season, while the Wolves fall to 4-10 on the year and 2-2 in SAC play.
 
Queens attackers Jena Ready and Abigail Paulus each scored four goals, while Kourtney Goebel added three. Paulus also dished out three assists to total seven points. Kelly Dowd totaled three points on two goals and an assist. Bridgette Larranaga had a great game defensively totaling three caused turnovers and six ground balls, while Brittany Barnwell led in draw controls with five.
 
The Royals scored 13 goals in the first half before allowing the Wolves to net two in the final minute of the period. A goal from Goebel with six seconds left gave Queens a 14-2 lead heading into the locker room.
 
The Wolves' Jessica Baxtrom would score the first goal of the second half a little under four minutes into action, getting her team a little closer to stopping the running clock. However, three goals in a row from Paulus would keep the clock rolling as Queens went ahead 17-3 with 16:33 on the clock. With time on their side and a 10-plus goal lead, the Royals then cruised to victory.
 
The Royals outshot Newberry 27-15 and won the battle for ground balls, 24-19. Queens dominated the draw control winning 19 compared to Newberry's six.
 
Noelle Allen led Newberry with two goals, while Carly Marksberry notched two assists. Goalkeeper Morgan Raffaele totaled nine saves in the loss.
 
The Royals will close out the regular season on the road first heading to Catawba College on April 9.
