Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte softball team hosted conference rival Wingate University in a doubleheader at Park Road Park today. After losing the first game 7-3 Queens displayed their grit, and went toe-to-toe with the powerful Bulldogs in a game that lasted 10 innings. Ultimately the Royals could not hold off their opponents and fell by the score of 10-6.
Game One
In game one the visiting Bulldogs came out with their offense clicking on all cylinders, and were able to build a 6-0 lead by the fourth inning. Despite the deep hole the Royals refused to give in and began to chip away at their opponent's lead utilizing timely hits.
In the sixth inning the Royals were able to add three runs with
Kaitlyn Cheek,
Amanda Meade, and Jasmyn Lyndsay all picking up RBIs for the Royals. But, the offensive effort was too little too late as the Bulldogs added another run in the seventh off a solo home run, and Queens was never able to make up the ground.
Micaela Hayes and
Kaitlyn Bodine paced the Royals offensively with two hits apiece, and each scored a run along with
Whitney Britt.
Ashley Rollins started the game for the Royals in the circle, and was replaced by Bodine in the fourth. They combined to seven earned runs on 14 hits.
Game two
The second game opened nearly identically to the first with the Bulldogs building a 6-0 lead by the fourth inning. But, despite the similarities up until that point the contests could not be any different. In a game filled with wild plays at the plate, defensive stops, and a never-say-die attitude the Royals left every bit of effort they could on the dirt at Park Road Park and turned in a thrilling effort that lasted ten full innings.
The Royals started their comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning when Cheek ripped a screamer between the legs of the shortstop. With the ball mashed all the way to the fence the Royals were able to clear the bases and cut the deficit to 6-3.
In the very next inning the Royals were able to pound in three more runs to even the score at six apiece. Picking up RBIs were the clutch trio of Bodine,
Ashton Whitaker, and
Amanda Meade. From that point on it was anyone's game with each team having opportunities to score, but just falling short of taking the lead.
With the game pushed to extra innings the Royals kept battling, and with several runners barely tagged out at the plate the score still stood at 6-6 by the top of the tenth. But, the Bulldog's bats could not be silenced long, and following a homerun and timely hits the visitors were able to win the game by the score of 10-6.
Samantha Martinez,
Taylor Rosenbalm, Britt, Bodine, and Whitaker led the Royals with two hits each.
The Royals are now 11-13 on the season and 0-4 in conference play. They travel to Tusculum this Saturday.
