Royals fall on Homecoming to Brevard

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (4-12 (SAC), 5-15) welcomed Brevard College (6-10 (SAC), 7-13) to Curry Arena this evening for Homecoming, falling 61-39 to the Tornados.  
 
Sophomore guard Nikia Squire led the Royals with 12 points, while senior forward Shonice Pettaway added 10 points. Pettaway also totaled eight rebounds.
 
Both teams struggled offensively in the opening half with the Royals shooting 24.1 percent from the floor, while Brevard shot 33.3 percent. Additionally, both teams only connected on 1-9 attempts from behind the three-point line.
 
Queens would get off to a 5-0 start before the Tornados took over the lead with an 8-0 run. A fast-break layup from Squire of Queens would end Brevard's run but the Royals couldn't get into a scoring rhythm to overcome their deficit before the halftime break. They headed into the locker room trailing the Tornados 24-15.
 
In the second half, Queens cut Brevard's lead to eight with a three-pointer from Squire, but the Tornados would answer with a 7-0 run to increase their lead to 15 points, 35-20, with 14:51 to play.
 
Later, Queens would get as close at 10 to the Tornados, who responded by quickly increasing their lead to 15 once again. Brevard would go up by as much as 28 points before the final horn sounded.
 
The Royals continued to struggle shooting in the second half turning in a 30.4 percent clip compared to Brevard's 58.3 percent second half shooting.
 
The Tornados were led by Shelby Wolfe who scored 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Madison Lenox added 15 points, while Katie Williams scored 14 points. Chelsea Turner finished with 11 rebounds and 8 points.
 
The Royals are back in Curry Arena against Wingate University on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs are currently ranked 24th in the nation.
