Results MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Junior runner
Catie Byrd became the first female runner in Queens University of Charlotte history to win the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional meet this morning crossing the line in 21:56.98 to earn a first place finish and a spot at the NCAA DII Cross Country Championship.
Earning the team bids to nationals today were Montevallo (60), North Georgia (90) and Wingate (91). Queens'
Megan Wright also had a spectacular run, finishing right on the heels of Byrd in today's 6K race taking second place in 22:17.92. The senior runner also punched her ticket to the national meet with her finish. The pair helped Queens secure a fourth place team finish with a score of 165.
"Both Catie and Megan ran impressively today," said
Jim Vahrenkamp, Director of Cross Country and Track and Field. "From the very beginning they went straight to the front of the pack and controlled the race from the outset. I am really excited to watch them work together at the national meet with the intent of finishing in the top forty to capture an all-America honors. Not to be forgotten were the efforts of
Megan Delamer and
Carissa Jenkins. They have both have battled injuries the entire season and were vital to the women's team capturing fourth place."
Megan Delamer finished 49
th for the Royals in 24:29.18, while
Carissa Jenkins was 53
rd with a time of 24:31.97.
Summer McFadden completed Queens' score with a 69
th place finish in 24:55.55.
Audrey Sizemore also raced today posting a time of 26:20.27.
"The women improved greatly on their 9th place finishes last year," Vahrenkamp stated. It was a complete team effort that displayed the teamwork that Coach Baney has sought to instill in her group since her arrival here at Queens." The top-25 racers were recognized on the all-region team.
Vahrenkamp closed saying, "I am grateful for the sacrifice that these women have made this fall. They have each put in many hours early in the morning and more miles than I can count on the various trails and parks in Charlotte. Seeing that work come to fruition is incredibly gratifying." Mathilde Timboni was the last runner to race in the national meet for Queens in 2012. Timboni finished 180
th overall in the race.
This year's championship will take place in Louisville, Ky., on December 6.
