Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A late goal from Newberry's Gabrielle Brodie helped the Wolves sneak out of the Queens Sports Complex with a 1-0 win this afternoon. The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team now sits at 4-6-1 on the year and 2-2-1 in South Atlantic Conference play following the loss to the top ranked team in the SAC. The Wolves, ranked seventh in the region, improve to 6-1-1 on the year and 4-1 in the league.
In the opening half where the Royals were outshot 6-1, Queens goalkeeper
Tori Danchak showed up huge totaling four saves while a fifth save was tallied by a Royals defender on the backline. Neither team would find the back of the net before the break.
The second half was much like the first, displaying aggressive play from both teams. Brodie's goal would come in the 89
th when a she met a through ball from Rachelle Serrano, sending it into the back of the net for the win.
The Royals best opportunity to score in the second half came in the 84
th minute from the boot of freshman forward
Mary Pritts. Defender
Lexi Landers began the play stealing the ball from Newberry's Brodie. She then raced up the right side of the field with a give-and-go to
Katie Causey before passing the ball to
Brenna Kate Grass on the opposite side of field. Grass would find Pritts sprinting up the middle for the shot that was saved by Newberry's Alexis Carrillo.
Danchak finished the game with six saves. She now totals 52 on the year, ranking her second in the league. Carrillo finished play with three saves.
The Royals are back at Dickson Field on October 8. They will host Catawba College at 5 p.m.
