Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Queens volleyball (5-16, 2-11 SAC) would battle hard against Carson-Newman (16-4, 12-1 SAC) on Friday, October 17, 2014, but would be unable to take down the conference rival going 25-11, 22-25, 25-23, 25-18 against the Eagles. Although Queens would be unable to grab a road win,
Sydney Kunz would take her fifth double-double of the year with 25 assists and 11 digs.
Kunz would also have two aces, three blocks, and a kill for the night as she helped the Royals battle their way through four sets.
Rebecca Cochran with two aces would continue a three game run of an unanswered serve bringing her total to 32 for the year.
Meredith Jones would lead the Royals on the attacking end with nine kills followed by
Katie Schoenrock with six. Both Jones and Schoenrock would pick up a block.
Megan Mancini would again fly across the court to keep the Royals alive as she grabbed 24 digs.
Queens would have six aces in the match as
Alex Thompson and
Liza Schimmelfing picked up the remaining two for the Royals. Carson-Neman would have nine for the night as Kristen Pickett would have four unreturned serves. Queens collectively found the Eagles floor 31 times while Carson-Newman took 45 kills for the match. The Eagles would narrowly top the Royals with 60 digs to 56, but Carson-Newman would post 20 total blocks over the Royals 12.
Carson-Newman would have two players achieve a double-double for the match as Sara Fairley took 11 points and 11 digs as Pickett would aid in 37 assists and ten digs. Rachel Harper would take hold of the Eagles offense with 14 kills, one ace and a block. She would be followed by Fairley who would add an ace and four blocks to her double-double match. Taylor Lowe would lead the Eagles in digs taking 15 during the four set night.
Carson-Newman jumped out to an early lead going up 4-0 before an error gave Queens their first point of the match. Cochran would take advantage with an ace but the ball would shortly revert back to the Eagles side.
Jessica Raines found a point for the Royals grabbing her first kill of the match to bring the team within two at 6-4, before the Eagles could punch out into a 10-5 lead. Kunz would find Cochran on the far side of the floor to put one past the Eagle's front wall as Queens pulled back within three at 10-7. After a few errors and an ace, the Royals would be forced call a timeout to regain focus (13-8). Schoenrock immediately grabbed a point for the Royals but Carson-Newman responded with seven unanswered putting them out in front 20-9. Queens would be unable to compose a comeback as they only found three points before the set fell to the Eagles 25-11.
The Royals would take the upper hand to start Set 2 pulling out to a 4-2 lead. A few miscued hits and a kill from Kiayna O'Neal would pull the Eagles within one (6-5), however Cochran would maintain a cushion with a skillfully laid shot to put the Royals backup 7-5. Schimmelfing put pace on an unreturned serve to cap off a 3-0 run for the Royals forcing Carson-Newman to call timeout (13-9). Queens would continue to hold their lead as Thompson would find the court and Cochran launch one to the adjacent corner (15-11). However, a series of errors for both teams would bring about a 17-17 game as both fought to establish control. After a 20-20 tie, Thompson would find two kills launching the squad to set point (24-21) before Set 2 would conclude with a service error on the Eagles side (25-22).
Meredith Jones and
Elizabeth Bialkowski would combine for huge block as Rachel Harper hammered one down the left side; however the team would hit five back-to-back errors to put the Eagles up 5-1. Jones would put a stop to the errors as she put one through the other side. Schoenrock would follow with two driving hits bringing the team within two (7-5 Eagles). Fairley would step-up for Carson-Newman taking three kills in a run that saw five unanswered Eagles points (12-5). Although a slow climb, Queens would close the gap on Carson-Newman as Bialkowski and Schoenrock flew two apiece to the Eagles side. Thompson and Cochran compliment this by adding a kill of their own (20-19 Eagles). Within that mix, Kunz would pick up a solo block for the Royals that fell to the back left corner at the 18-15 mark. Errors would again help the Eagles side, but Jones would push one into the corner as the Royals fought to stay alive at 22-20. Queens found their tying point with a Schoenrock and Thompson block bringing everyone to a 22-22 game. A timeout from Carson-Newman would halt the Royals as they took two errors before Fairley would end the set 25-23.
Kristen Pickett would start the Eagles off with two aces aiding Carson-Newman in their 4-0 starting run. Queens would pull back as Schoenrock sailed one to the backline to bring the Royals within two (6-4). Queens would again face a 10-5 hole, bringing about a timeout call. However, Carson-Newman would have no response as the Royals took five unanswered points to tie things up at 10-10. Mirroring Queens, the Eagles would emerge from their timeout grabbing three blocks for a 15-13 edge on the set. Fairley and Wilson would each take a kill to heave the Eagles even further as they took an 18-13 lead. Kunz would take a sneaky, punch to the back line to keep the Royals alive, but O'Neal would bury one for the Eagles bringing the game to a close at 25-18.
The Royals move on to face Lincoln-Memorial (12-9, 8-5 SAC) tomorrow at 2:00 PM, at the Mary Mars Gymnasium.
