Shonice Pettaway scored 26 points this evening as Queens University of Charlotte (5-10) fell 72-60 to Lenoir-Rhyne University (12-4). The loss brings Queens' South Atlantic Conference record to 4-7. The Bears improve to 7-4 in the league.
The Royals began the game in an offensive funk shooting 0-8 before getting their first two points from
Nikia Squire at the foul line with 15:47 on the clock. They would shoot 25.8 percent from the floor for the half to head into the locker room trailing the Bears, 33-24, despite getting to within one of Lenoir-Rhyne on a few occasions.
The Bears stretched their lead out to 16, 43-27, on a jumper from Jenni Gust just under four minutes into the second half. By the 12:49 mark, Queens had cut the Bears' lead to six, 45-39, following a 12-2 run. However a quick five points straight from Lenoir-Rhyne's Krystal Patton would put the visiting Bears back up by 11.
Queens would get close to the Bears again when Squire knocked down a three-pointer at 5:13 to bring the Royals to within seven, 60-53, of Lenoir-Rhyne. Unfortunately for Queens, the Bears had another offensive push left to finish the game with a 20-7 run.
The Royals improved their shooting percentage in the second half, shooting 46.7 percent. The Bears shot 50 percent in the second.
Also reaching double-figures for Queens tonight was Squire who finished with 19 points on 6-8 shooting. The sophomore guard shot a perfect 3-3 from the three-point line and 4-4 from the foul line. Squire also pulled down 12 rebounds to record the first double-double of her career. Pettaway totaled eight rebounds for Queens.
Gust led the Bears with 17 points on 6-12 shooting, while Jazmine Charles finished with 14 points. Nneka Awuruonye and Jordan Hiatt scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Royals are on the road at Anderson University on Saturday. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
