Royals cruise to 3-0 victory over Pacers

Box Score

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team won 3-0 in what was a well-deserved result against an experienced Peach Belt Conference opponent, the Pacers from USC-Aiken. The Royals claimed their first win on the season to move to 1-1-0 while the Pacers fell to 0-1-1.

The game started out at a lively pace, with Queens able to string several passes together, eventually finding Thiago Andrade, whose shot was blocked by USC-Aiken keeper Joshua Poissant.

After several back and forth moments, Queens was able to force a corner kick off of a shot from Gersi Cilingiri. Andrade went to take the corner and produced a beauty of a cross, which found the net via freshman defender Jonathan Onyeaka. As Onyeaka ran into the top of the box, he connected with the ball and delicately placed it over the outstretched arms of Poissant and right under the crossbar. It was the freshman's first goal of his career, and ended up being the winning goal for the Royals.

The rest of the first half featured several chances for the Royals and Pacers alike, but those chances weren't able to find the back of the net.

The second half started with the Royals forcing play down the left hand side of the field through two dynamic freshman, defender Austin Huddy and midfielder Corey Brown. On a pulsating run down that same left side, Brown was able to cut back quickly with hopes of curling the ball into the six yard box. Fortunately for the Royals, the cross immediately found the hand of a Pacer defender and a penalty was called.

Andrade stepped up and professionally sent a low liner into the side netting, sending the Pacers keeper the opposite way. Andrade's penalty put the Royals up 2-0 and gave them insurance early in the second half.

Only three minutes later, Brown again was able to beat his defender down the left hand side, getting off a clean five-yard pass to senior captain Felipe Netto, who placed it gently in the back of the net. It's a hot start for the senior, scoring his second goal in two games. For the freshman Brown, it was his first career assist.

With a 3-0 lead, Queens was able to ride the game out, making sure that they kept their clean sheet intact.

The Royals will return to Dickson Field next Wednesday for a doubleheader with the women's team against the Mount Olive Trojans. The men's game starts at 7:30 pm.
