CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Senior forward Brooke Foil scored two goals and notched one assist to help lead the Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team past Montevallo this afternoon on the road at Clayton State. The Royals begin the 2013 season at 1-0 with the regional win over the Falcons.
"I am extremely proud of the win," said head coach Katie Talbert. "They (Montevallo) were a good Peach Belt team, and the win gives us an excellent start in the region."
Foil, named to the 2013 SAC Women's Soccer Preseason All-Conference Team, got the Royals going in the third minute of action after putting the ball in the net from about eight yards out. She then scored her second goal in the 31st after receiving a short cross from freshman forward Brenna Kate Grass eight yards out. Grass also assisted Foil on her first goal.
"Brooke displayed great leadership on the field this afternoon," Talbert stated. "Our freshmen also stepped up and had a huge impact in the game. We had numerous opportunities on the attack resulting in 13 shots on goal. All in all it was a well-developed attack."
Queens' third goal came in the second half when freshman midfielder Caitlyn Rodrigues took a shot on goal that hit the crossbar before rolling into the goal in the 66th minute. Foil was awarded the assist on the play.
The Royals outshot the Falcons 26-13 in today's game. Goalkeeper Jessyca Young tallied three saves to collect the win in the net.
Montevallo's single goal was scored by Paige Scott. Taylor Kerr took the loss in the net with 10 saves on the day.
"The hard work that the girls have put in since the end of last season paid off, and it's nice for them to be rewarded for their effort and discipline over the past three weeks," Talbert added.
The Royals will be back in action against Clayton State on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Morrow, Ga.
