Protiva Stands Tall as Royals Draw with Jacksonville

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – McKayla Budion netted her team-leading fourth goal of the season, while Emily Protiva recorded 12 saves as the Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team battled Jacksonville University to a 1-1 draw on Thursday evening at the Queens Sports Complex. Senior captain Jaisa Bader also made her return to the field for the first time since the 2024 season. The result gives Queens points in back-to-back ASUN matches as the Royals move to 2-7-2 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play, while the Dolphins move to 3-3-4 overall and 1-0-2 in the ASUN.

SCORING SUMMARY
50:26 - QUEENS -  Budion (Assists: Franny Smith,  Protiva)
59:51 - JACKSONVILLE - Millie Urquhart (Assist: Paula Herranz)

Turning Point
Jacksonville applied pressure throughout the opening half, but the Queens backline and  Protiva stood firm. The Dolphins registered nine shots in the opening 45 minutes, including two attempts that struck the woodwork, while Protiva made three saves to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime. The opening period also featured a special moment for Queens as senior captain  Bader entered the match in the 38th minute, marking her first appearance since the 2024 season. The Royals wasted little time finding the breakthrough after halftime. In the 51st minute, a ball sent forward by Protiva helped spark an attacking opportunity involving Smith, who connected with Budion for the finish to give Queens a 1-nil advantage. The goal marked Budion's fourth of the season, extending her lead as the Royals' top scorer. Jacksonville responded in the 60th minute after being awarded a penalty kick. Protiva came up with the initial save against Paula Herranz, but the Dolphins capitalized moments later when Millie Urquhart found the back of the net to level the match at one. The Dolphins continued to push for a winner throughout the remaining minutes, but Protiva and the Royals' defense held strong. Protiva recorded nine second-half saves, including a crucial stop in the 89th minute, as Queens secured another point in ASUN play with the 1-1 draw.
