Royals play to 1-1 tie in game with Anderson

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The women's soccer team walked away from the Queens Sports Complex with a 1-1 tie against conference foe Anderson University tonight under the lights giving the Royals a 5-1-2 overall record. The Trojans now sit at 2-3-2 on the season.

The first half featured tough defense and chances that were few and far between. Anderson was unable to get a shot on goal, while Queens managed only two.

After what must have been an engaging talking to in the locker room at the half, both teams came out and were completely different offensively.

In the 62nd minute, the offensive prowess both teams were showing finally paid off for Anderson; as Krystal Goss was able to find Emily Perez wide open on the left side of the goal. Perez was able to chip the ball over keeper Kelsey Seretis. Seretis, technically sound in her form, was beaten by a quality and composed finish.

After a flutter of chances from both teams, in the 76th minute, Queens was finally able to convert, with Kelli Gottry netting from only a few yards out. Senior Brooke Foil made a threatening run down the right hand side and was able to beat her marker, keep her balance, and put in a dangerous cross to the near post. An Anderson defender mishandled the cross and Gottry was able to nestle the ball into the side netting, giving Queens an equalizer and much needed momentum.

The remainder of the half showed high effort from both teams, but neither were able to compose themselves in the final third, forcing an overtime period. It was the second overtime game for the Royals. For the Trojans, it was their third.

Overtime's best chance fell to freshman Caitlyn Rodrigues, who received a cross eight yards out on the left side of the goal. Choosing to finesse the ball over the keeper's head, Rodrigues put what looked to be a perfect shot over the keeper's head. Anderson keeper Kaitlyn Neipp made what could be called the best save of the year, reaching up as high as she could and then bringing the ball down in a composed manner.

It was certainly a deflating moment for head coach Katie Talbert's team, but give credit where it is deserved. Neipp had surely saved at least a point for her team.

The game ended in a tie, and in a long conference season, it is a point well-earned for both teams.

The Royals will return on Saturday to host Coker College. Game time is at 5 p.m.
