Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Royals kicked off their final home weekend with a sweep over Conference rival Mount Olive at Park Road Park. The two wins move the Royals into fourth place in the standings as the regular season comes to a close and teams battling for postseason position.
Game 1
The Royals celebrated their annual Strike out Cancer games this weekend with players, coaches, and fans wearing pink and the team raising money for the fight against breast cancer.
Whitney Britt (Gibson, N.C., Scotland) would waste no time to get the celebration going, hitting a homerun to center on the first pitch of the inning. Later in the opening inning
Kaitlyn Cheek (Richmond, Va., JR Tucker ) added another solo shot to give Royals an early 2-0 lead.
Ashley Rollins (Fairfax, Va., Fairfax) pitched five shutout innings and allowed the Royals to extend their lead to 4-0.
Kaitlyn Bodine (Scottsville, Va., Monticello) would come in relief to close out the game and earn the save as Mount Olive's rally would fall short for a final score of 5-4 in favor of the Royals. Cheek,
Megan Lathbury (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central) and
Amanda Meade (Bristow, Va., Osbourn Park) led the balanced offense with two hits each.
Game 2
Roles were reversed in the second game as the Trojans jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning off Royals starter
Lyndey McCurry (Commerce, Ga., Hebron Christian). McCurry would settle down and not allow another run until the fifth inning.
The Royals offense came alive in the fourth inning as senior
Noemi Rodriguez (Miami, Fla., G. Holmes Braddock Senior ) got a two RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2. Meade came to the plate and tied the score on a bunt squeeze play. Momentum swung back into the Trojans favor in the fifth and sixth inning as they would extend the lead back to 5-3.
Cheek, who led the team with three hits on the game, hit a leadoff homerun to center to bring the Royals back within a run. Bodine later tied the game at 5-5 with an RBI single to right field. This would setup left fielder
Robyn Levine (Raleigh, N.C., Enloe) for the dramatic victory in the bottom half of inning number seven. With runners at first and second and one out, Levine took a fastball up the middle allowing Lathbury to come home from second for the game winner.
Levine and Rodriguez had two hits apiece and Bodine pitched the final two and two thirds for her ninth win of the season.
The Royals are now 11-7 in Conference and 20-19 overall with the final games of the regular season set for tomorrow Sunday April 14 vs. Lees-McRae. The team will be celebrating senior day and honoring seniors before the first game. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
