Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (13-9) collected a season-high 24 steals en route to defeating Erskine College (2-22), 65-46, this evening. The Royals improve to 11-7 in the league, while the Flying Fleet drop to 1-17.
Junior forward
Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) led the Royals this evening with 27 points, seven rebounds, seven steals, and five blocks.
Nikia Squire (Columbia, S.C., Ridge View) and
Melissa Thomas (Havelock, N.C., Havelock) each scored 12 points, and
Shanel Sweet (Land O'Lakes, Fla., Land O' Lakes) dished out a game-high six assist.
After collecting 15 steals, the Royals had outscored Erskine 31-19 in the first half. Despite shooting just 34.4 percent, Queens was able to build their lead by converting the Flying Fleet's mishaps into 17 points. Squire led the Royals with 10 points at the break.
A 20-9 run in the second would help Queens open the game up and see their largest lead at 3:22, 59-39.
The Royals outscored Erskine 28-12 in the paint this evening, and notched 20 points off of Erskine's turnovers.
Chandler Turner and Tori Whittenberg led the Flying Fleet with 12 points apiece. Jana Dixon pulled down 10 rebounds.
Queens travels to face Barton College on Wednesday, February 20 at 5:30 p.m.
