CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte community surprised former Queens head men's basketball coach and athletic director Dale Layer with the announcement that the performance court in Curry Arena would be named in his honor. The announcement was made following this evening's volleyball game.
Â
The 1989-90 men's basketball team, in town for the 2013 Hall of Fame Ceremony, stood on the court side by side with the current men's basketball team as Coach Layer was surprised with the news that the court would be named after him for all he had done for Queens and the men's basketball program. Layer was instrumental in bringing the first males to the previous all girl campus. In addition, he helped to establish the foundation for Queens Athletics in the NCAA.
Â
Later at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Layer expressed how much his time at Queens was a "life changing experience" for him and the young men who had taken a chance on attending Queens. Each member was presented with a framed jersey, ring and trophy following a lovely presentation that brought laughter and tears of joy from many.
