Box Score SALISBURY, N.C. – Senior forward
Brooke Foil scored the game-winner tonight for Queens University of Charlotte with 38 seconds left on the clock lifting the Royals past Catawba College, 4-3. The conference win improves Queens' SAC record to 3-1-2, while putting their overall record at 7-2-2. The Indians (5-5-1) are now 2-3-1 in SAC women's soccer action.
Â
Keeping Catawba's defense on its toes, the Royals were the first to put a few shots on frame. However, it would be the Indians who got on the board first with a goal in the 20
th minute when Mary Kirkman put a ball in the net with the first shot for her team on the day.
Â
The Royals would respond almost five minutes after the Catawba goal, taking advantage of a set piece opportunity. Freshman defender
Ashley Osiecki's corner kick would reach
Mary Stringini before finding its way to
Brenna Kate Grass for the score. The goal was the first for Grass in her collegiate career. Both Osiecki and Stringini were awarded assists on the play.
Â
Fortunately for Queens, Grass would not stop there as the freshman forward went on to score her second goal in the 29
th minute. The goal, assisted by freshman midfielder
Caitlyn Rodrigues, gave Queens a 2-1 lead, which they would hold on to until the break.
Â
Six minutes into the second half of action, the Indians would knot the game at 2-2 with a goal from Karen Presnell. Presnell was able to rebound a shot taken by her teammate, Juliana Conte, that ricocheted off the post to her feet.
Â
Kelli Gottry immediately answered for Queens putting the ball into the net after receiving a pass from defender
Emily Werner exactly a minute after Catawba's goal.
Â
Queens would hold the lead for just a short time as the Indians put another point on the board with a goal from Athena Bless a little over three minutes later.
Â
With the game tied at 3-3 and over 30 minutes of action left to play, both teams turned up the intensity looking for the game-winner. Queens' Foil would be the star to rise in the bunch, giving the Royals the victory with less than a minute left in regulation.
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Jessyca Young improved her record to 6-1-1 on the season in goal this evening. She tallied four saves.
Â
The win over the Indians was the first for Queens since the 1999 season when the Royals won 1-0 in overtime. Catawba entered today's game with a 14-5 all-time record over the Royals.
Â
Queens will be on the road again for their next game, when they take on Lincoln Memorial Saturday at 1 p.m.
