BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. - Felix Duchampt captured the Royals' first ever South Atlantic Conference Championship finishing first at the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Cross Country Championships. He also led the Royals to a second place finish in the team competition. The women's team, led by
Katharina Seelos and
Andrea Guerra, also finished the team competition in second place at the Montreat College Course.
In the first event of the Championships, freshman
Katharina Seelos, who became eligible to run for the Royals this past week, finished in sixth place in 19:31. Right on the freshman's heels in seventh was senior
Andrea Guerra in a time of 19:32.
Queens head coach
Jim Vahrenkamp was pleased with both runners saying, "Katharina and Andrea worked well together in this race, and we are excited to see what they can do at the upcoming regionals." Both runners earned spots on the SAC All-Conference First Team.
Senior
Mathilde Timboni was the next highest Royals runner coming in 12
th in 20:06. She was joined on the all-conference second team by freshman Oh So Young, who finished today's race in 14
th with a time of 20:12. Seelos and Young snagged placed on the SAC All-Freshman Team following their performances.
Audrey Sizemore and
Summer McFadden were the next fastest runners for the young Royals squad finishing in 21
st and 22
nd, respectively.
Megan Delamer and
Chelsea Reikie also ran for Queens.
Overall Vahrenkamp was excited about the bright future his squad have stating, "The team has really grown and matured throughout the season. I also credit my assistant,
Tsehaye Baney, for that. She has worked very hard with the team to help them progress. Both men's and women's teams are very young, and she deserves a lot of credit for helping them grow as a team and the improvement shows in each race."
The women's team finished in second place overall behind Wingate, who swept the top four spots race. Mars Hill, Anderson, and Lenoir-Rhyne would round out the top-five.
The men's team was led by junior
Felix Duchampt who captured the conference individual title for Queens in 25:18. This capped an incredible regular season as his hard work earned him the honor of SAC Runner of the Year. He was also named to the SAC All-Conference First Team.
"Felix is looking more and more comfortable with each race and I believe he can compete to win at regionals." said Vahrenkamp.
Joining Duchampt on the all-conference first team was freshman
Jake Betancourt. Betancourt showed his talent today by finishing in sixth place in a time of 26:11. He was also named to the SAC All-Freshman Team.
James Hollingsworth completed the race in 18
th place in a time of 27:20, while Alex Guilluame and Christopher Vilela completed the run in the top-30.
"Chris had to come back from injury at the beginning of the season and now he really is running well and showing the talent he possesses," said Vahrenkamp.
Dominik Scholle and Nathan Smith also ran, completing the race inside the top-70 for the Royals.
The Royals finished second in the team competition falling to Mars Hill. Anderson, Brevard, and Lincoln Memorial rounded out the top-five.
Next for the Royals will be the 2013 NCAA DII Southeast Regional Championships on Saturday November 9. The meet will be held at Queens University of Charlotte's home course, McAlpine Creek Park.
