Women’s basketball drops first home game to Barton

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte's six-game win streak was snapped this evening by the Barton College Bulldogs. The Royals (8-7) fell to the Bulldogs (11-4) by a score of 83-64, dropping their league record to 6-4. Barton is now 10-1 in conference play.
 
Leading the Royals in scoring tonight was Nikia Squire (Columbia, S.C., Ridge View) who shot 7-of-13 to total 20 points. Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) recorded 17 points, seven rebounds, three blocks, two steals and one assist. Shanel Sweet (Land O'Lakes, Fla., Land O' Lakes)scored nine points and tallied four assists.
 
The Bulldogs got going quickly, doubling Queens' points, 16-8, eight minutes into play. The Royals would come alive with an 11-1 run to take their first lead of the game, 19-17, at 9:44. Both teams would trade baskets the next couple of trips down the court before the Bulldogs regained control for good to take a 37-31 lead t the break.
 
Both teams traded baskets to begin the second before the Royals put together a string of short runs to cut Barton's lead to three, 55-52, with 12:02 to play. However, a 16-2 run for the Bulldogs would extend their lead back out to 17 with 6:43 left on the clock. Unforced turnovers by the Royals allowed the Bulldogs to hold onto the lead and take the win.
 
Barton was led by conference leading scorer Nyesha Willie who totaled 31 points, six steals, five assists, four rebounds and one block. Elaine Morgan finished with 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals. Shante Neal totaled 10 points, six boards and four steals.
 
The Royals are on the road against North Greenville University Saturday at 2 p.m.
