Box Score 2 TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte Softball team traveled to face the West Division leading North Greenville University Crusaders in a matchup of Conference Carolinas heavyweights. The Royals went blow for blow against the Crusaders and split the games to give them a 19-21 overall record and 9-4 in conference play.
The first game of the doubleheader was a matchup of two of Conference Carolinas best pitchers as senior
Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawhatchee) faced Rachel Glazerbook of North Greenville. Dodge not only picked up the win for the game, but also only gave up five hits in the game to the potent Crusaders' offense.
The Royals at the plate were led by junior
Megan Lathbury (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central) who went 2-4 for the game, and batted in two of the Royals' four runs. Her most crucial hit came in the seventh inning when she drove in
Keeya Turner (Fayetteville, N.C., 71st ) to give the Royals the 4-3 win in exciting fashion. Sophomores
Kaitlyn Cheek (Richmond, Va., JR Tucker ) and
Emily Poulton (Temecula, Calif., Great Oak) also excelled offensively as they each went 2-3 in the game.
The second game of the doubleheader was one that saw the Royals fall into a five run hole following the second inning. True to their gritty nature the Royals never gave up and continued to scratch out runs before they fell by the score 10-6.
Offensively freshman
Whitney Britt (Gibson, N.C., Scotland)paced Queens with three hits and two runs batted in.
Emma Schultz (Silver Spring, Md., Paint Branch) and Turner followed her with two hits apiece, and as a whole the team picked up ten hits in the second game.
The Royals return home on Thursday to face Tusculum in a doubleheader. The games begin at 5 p.m. at Park Road Park.
