Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) put the Royals ahead knocking down two at the foul line. A Trojan turnover returned the ball to Queens allowing
Dyonna Battle (Rocky Mount, N.C., Rocky Mount) to ice the 64-61 Queens victory with two more from the charity stripe.
The Royals end their season at 10-16 (8-9 CC), while Mount Olive heads into the Conference Carolinas Tournament with an 18-8 (12-5 CC) regular season record.
Pettaway led the Royals with 27 points on 9-of-18 shooting. She was 7-for-7 from the foul line and grabbed 14 rebounds giving her a total of 11 double-doubles on the year.
Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) finished with 12 points and 10 boards for her 11
th double-double of the season as well.
Melissa Thomas (Havelock, N.C., Havelock) scored 11 points, while
Shanel Sweet (Land O'Lakes, Fla., Land O' Lakes) added seven points and six assists.
Andrea Jones led the Trojans with 15 points, while Joneiqua Gary chipped in with 14. Jasmine McDonald collected a double-double on 13 points and 15 rebounds. McDonald also led her team with six dimes. Tamara Nesmith grabbed 10 rebounds.
Both teams got off to a slow start as the score sat tied at 2-2 with 15:41 on the clock. The Royals then went on a 10-2 run after finding some offense helping them create some space as they went up by as much as 14. However, the Trojans would close the half with a 15-2 run giving the Royals just a one point lead heading into the break, 32-31.
Mount Olive's McDonald tied the game up at 36-36 with a lay-in just before the Trojans took a four-point lead at the start of the second half. From that point the game stayed tight with Mount Olive leading the way for most of the half. The Royals didn't let down though playing high-pressure defense putting them in a great position as the final minutes approached. Back-to-back buckets from Pettaway would give the Royals a 57-56 lead with 3:43 to play. The Trojans answered with a 5-0 spurt regaining the lead just before Pettaway drilled a shot from downtown to make the score 61-60. Her game-winning free-throws would soon follow.
