Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. –The Queens University of Charlotte softball team took the diamond today against a Wingate side they had not beaten since 2003. Following the afternoon's doubleheader the Royals had not only stopped that streak, but went undefeated on the day improving their record to 4-8 on the season. The Bulldogs drop to 7-2 after the sweep.
The Royals were led all afternoon by the continued stellar pitching of
Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawhatchee). From the start Dodge toyed with the opposing batters, and finished the first game with only one hit allowed in her six innings on the mound. In addition to a strong defensive performance Dodge was aided by the white-hot bats of the rest of the lineup who gave her an 8-run cushion.
Noemi Rodriguez (Miami, Fla., G. Holmes Braddock Senior ) started the day off with a blast over the fence in the second inning pacing the Royals along with
Keeya Turner (Fayetteville, N.C., 71st ), who collected three hits in the first game. Also adding to the offensive explosion was
Emily Poulton (Temecula, Calif., Great Oak) with two hits and
Whitney Britt (Gibson, N.C., Scotland) with three runs scored.
The Royals found themselves in a much closer affair during the second game as they traded runs with the Bulldogs of Wingate through the first four innings. With the game tied 3-3 in the fifth, it was the Royals' bats that caught fire once again. Scoring four runs, Queens put itself ahead and was not to be caught once Dodge returned to the mound in relief of starting pitcher
Amanda Rodriguez (Bear Creek, N.C., Chatham Central).
Dodge along with
Kaitlyn Cheek (Richmond, Va., JR Tucker ) went 3-3 in the second game, and led a group of Royals with multiple hits. Among these were Rodriguez and
Emma Schultz (Silver Spring, Md., Paint Branch) who had two hits apiece.
The Royals hope to build on this offensive surge as they head to Salisbury, N.C., for the Catawba College Tournament this weekend.
