Queens takes out undefeated King

The Royals won 70-56.

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team rallied in the second half to defeat previously undefeated King College 70-56 at the Grady Cole Center this afternoon. The Royals (16-7) improve to 11-1 in Conference Carolinas sitting atop the East Division, while King (20-5) falls to 12-1 in the league remaining atop the West.

Leading Queens' scoring effort was senior Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) with 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Bailey also collected eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) was the only other Royal to reach double figure scoring with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Sean Eads (Greenville, S.C., Eastside)Brent Evans (Beaufort, S.C., Battery Creek) and Brandon Nichols (Fayetteville, N.C., Jack Britt) each scored six points.

Logan Lyle led the Tornado with 20 points, while Eddie Piccinini scored 14. Lio Gedeon and Brandon Goss each grabbed eight rebounds.

The first half was a tight one with Queens taking a 28-26 lead heading into intermission. Though only shooting 25-percent from the floor, the Tornado remained in the game at the free-throw line knocking down 12 of their 14 opportunities. The Royals shot 45.8-percent from the floor scoring 18 of their points in the paint.

King held a four point lead with 5:27 to play in the half when Stabler scored back-to-back buckets, one being a three-pointer, giving the Royals a one-point lead, 23-22. Four ties would follow before Eads scored the go-ahead basket in the final minute for the halftime lead.

A 9-0 run capped with a jumper from Bailey gave Queens an 11-point lead with 13:55 to play in the second. The Royals extended their lead to 13 before the Tornado came back cutting Queens' lead to six with 6:13 to play. The Royals answered with an electric 9-0 run that ended with an emphatic dunk from Stabler. Bailey dove to the floor for a loose ball collecting a steal and passed the ball to Stabler for the opportunity. Another fast-break layup from Stabler followed by a three-pointer from Nate Blackburn (Burlington, N.C., Graham) would seal the victory for Queens as they handed the Tornado their first conference loss of the season.

The Royals outscored the Tornado 38-16 in the paint and notched 15 points off of turnovers.

Queens returns to action on Tuesday night at Pfeiffer University in a game slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
