Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sophomore forwards
Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) and
Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) dominated this evening each recording double-doubles to pace the Royals to an 87-62 victory over St. Andrews University. The win is the first for Queens University of Charlotte in conference play as their record improves to 3-8 overall and 1-1 in the league. The Knights drop to 0-9 on the year and 0-2 in Conference Carolinas action.
Tyler Knight gave St. Andrews a 6-4 lead early in the game with a three-pointer, but the lead was short lived as Queens'
Shatonya Hardy (Fayetteville, N.C., E.E. Smith) knocked down a jumper to tie the game and spark a 24-to-10 run. A three-pointer from
Alexys Taylor (Charlotte, N.C., Vance) gave Queens its largest lead of the half at 20 with 1:57 to play.
The Royals headed into the locker room with a 19 point lead, 50-31, after shooting 54.05-percent from the floor. St. Andrews shot 46.43-percent.
Myatt scored a bucket at 17:28 to increase the Royals' lead to 23, 54-31, early in the second half. Brittany Roberts broke up Queens' scoring with a basket from three-point land to give the Knights their first points of the half. St. Andrews was able to close Queens' lead to 13 halfway through the second, but the Royals found another run going up by as much as 25 points for the win.
Queens completely dominated under the glass this evening out-rebounding the Knights 42-to-25.
Hardy finished this evening's game with 14 points to match her season-high. She also collected seven rebounds, four assists and four steals for a well-rounded outing.
Melissa Thomas (Havelock, N.C., Havelock) scored nine points, while
Shanel Sweet (Land O'Lakes, Fla., Land O' Lakes) added eight.
Kimayah Fulcher led the Knights with 12 points and eight rebounds. Roberts and Rachel Hewitt recorded 11 points apiece, while Benee Norton chipped in with 10 points.
The Royals will next travel to Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. to play on Saturday. The game is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
